Here is one that still is remembered "Joan of Ark". She fought for the French People. Although she was burned alive, she still lives in the mind and History of her Beloved Country France!

Sir Thomas More, author of "Utopia", member of Parliament, and a devout Roman Catholic.
He fought for freedom of speech and died for his religious beliefs.
His alleged last words at his execution, a result of his act of treason in his refusal to sign the Oath of Supremacy and the Act of Succession under the reign of Henry VIII, were:
"The King's good servant, but God's first."
He and Socrates are two of my heroes. Both men lived for and died for what they believed in, and we have benefited from their (along with many others') sacrifices.

Really, all the apostles, except John who died naturally ..
Why doesn't Jesus count? He fits your definition better than anyone else in history.
Socrates is another example (Metaphor of the Cave, etc).
