Go to a good stylist, one that works especially well with curly hair. Call around and ask specifically if you have to. She/he will probably advise you that layers will help. In extreme circumstances, I have actually permed the straight hair to match the rest.

You can have a stylist put a perm in that section of your hair if it bothers you that much--however an easier alternative is to keep your hair very layered so that the top isn't so heavy and the curls spring up more.

i thought i was the only one with this hair type only mine's reversed. i have mine layered and i wash and condition my hair in a curling shampoo. then i put curling gel in and little at a time work that in. my favorite gel is by pantene. the layers help release the curl that is there in the straight layer. if all else fails throw it in a ponytail and don't worry about it 10 years from now nobody will remember that you had a couple bad hair days.

you could ask your hair stylist to perm only that layer of hair, or you could use a curl enhancing gel/shampoo etc on specifically that area. i think the perm would work the best.
