I just took my KCS to the vet after getting some advice here thank you to all that helped me. Any way the vet said that it looks like heart failure and she has a heart memor. This morning she got out of bed and collapse and was breathing really hard. She also then later had a fit. the vet said she has to stay in hospital and they need to do an x-ray and ultrasound she told me that there is medication but really expensive and it may not work. everybody is saying just put her down.the vet said she is not in pain but its very stressfull on her. What are the changes the medication will work or should we just put her down. I am still waiting for the test results. here is my first post so you can remember.

I have a KCS that is about 8 years old. the past week or two she has been making

Wow, that is a tough decision. I had to maek the sme decision two years ago about one of my cats. He had cancer, and was terminal. I knew it would only be a matter of time. There is only a 50/50 chance at best that the medication will work. I would do it on a trial basis. Try the medication for a month. That is ample time to know if the medicatin will work or now. If in the event that the medication doesn't work, then you should put her down just to keep her from suffering. I know that she is not in pain now, but as this problem progresses, she will eventually be in pain. You don't want her to suffer. Try the meds for a month and if it doesn't work, then put her down so she won't suffer, and so that you won't have to watch her die a slow and painful death. I know this a difficult decision. It's hard to part with a pet that you have raised for so many years. I know first hand how that feels. I hope this works out for you. Good luck.

It depends on the degree of heart disease. Many dogs can be helped quite well on heart medication, but there is no way to tell how long she will do OK. Sooner of later her heart just won't be strong enough to keep working well, and the medication will no longer help. You don't know how she'll respond without trying. It may take a couple of days and some oxygen therapy to see how she does. Good luck!

it sounds like secondary heart failure possibly to megaesophagus or collapsing trachea or just primary heartfailure. 95% of veterinary meds are human meds. ask for a written prescription and check around for different prices at pharmacies. if it is a heart medication like digoxin or enalapril and a breathing medication like theophylline or aminophylline, those drugs are not that expensive at pharmacies. all drugs are expensive at a vets office, as the majority of them make a 75% to over 100% profit.
