Yes, it's called living in the Moment. Through meditation or centering prayer one CAN learn to break out of the thought life and live completely in the Spirit. It's not 'controlling thoughts'. Its more like waking up from the life that thoughts create to the life that is really there in the Spirit.

A human being is made of 3 components, I believe. Physical, spiritual and intellect. The devil has quite some power over the physical realm, thus the physical temptation He was thrown to earth to rule over a certain period of time. God has total control over the spiritual, that's why we pray to Him to intervene when we have problems. Then there's the mental, the one the devil tries to manipulate to make you do what he wants you to do in the physical. He has access to your brain, so you can't control what comes in. But you can control your response. Asking God to help you do that makes it easier to get rid of any ill thoughts.

I don't believe God controls my thoughts. And as for controling my thoughts, geez what a tough one. It's hard enough to exhibit self control, you want thought control too?

IICorinthians 10:5:
"casting down imaginations & every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ."

That does not compute, click, click, that does not compute.
Why should we?
One thing that often works, in some semblance of that direction, when someone meditates on the Word of God, looks for places to apply its principles, prayerfully asks God's direction in making a choice. It crowds out a lot of junk, especially when the mulling God's desires is because you affectionately want to please Him.
I suspect that is as close to what you mentioned as what He expects of us is going to get to it.

No one can stop the occasional random thoughts that enter our minds. Just as you cannot stop birds from flying over your head. But you can stop them from building nests in your hair. Pretty simple huh?
