There are a lot of different kinds of Buddhism, all with different beliefs, but in a nutshell:

The Buddha was a normal person who, through meditation, was able to gain insight in to the reality of the world. He saw that all people suffer, and suffering is caused by desire and aversion. Desire to attain certain states, such as possessing material things, attaining certain states of mind, and pleasurable feelings, and aversion to certain states of mind, painful feelings, losing possesion, etc.

The Buddha taught that any person could achieve enlightenment (the cessation of suffering) if he followed the Buddha's instructions. Some Buddhists believe there is no god, others believe that it doesn't matter whether there is a god or not, and others believe that there is a god.

Buddhism can be seen as a philosophy, but I would argue that it is more than that because in most cases it involves the transcendence of the everyday world.

Keep in mind that this is a brief explanation, and that I am not a Buddhist. Also, views of Buddhism in the west tend to differ from those countries where a large portion of the population practice it. BabyBear's wikipedia link is a good place to start.

Go to a Buddhism website or read the teachings of The Dali Lama who is the spiritual Buddhist of Tibet and Buddhist's.He is currently exiled from his country by the stupid Chinese who say he incites war practices which is just an absolute load of rubbish.
Broadly speaking it is about finding your inner spiritual self and becoming one with the universe. Most westerners would classify Buddhism as a religion which it is most definitely not. Explore and enjoy.

It is sort of a combo of religion and philosophy- it is a way of life.

It leads nowhere, nice good things to say, they are good people, but you will go to hell if you don't believe in the truth.
