You know, Frida Kahlo is an artist who both attracts and repels me at the same time. She did so many pictures of herself which kind of put me off. At times she seemed beautiful, and others extremely unattractive--although that didn't put me off, because there seemed a kind of honesty there. But her insistence on leaving her eyebrows straight across seemed to me a mannerism that was pointless, except perhaps to shock, or to say "I don't care what anyone thinks about me." She did some really interesting pictures that memorialized death and I think I liked those the best. They were in the tradition of her people. She did one for Clare Booth Luce Luce's friends suicide (jumping off a high building). You see her far away and tiny and high in the background standing and then falling forward and into the foreground where she lies on the ground dead. The funny thing about the picture that one is more aware of the woman as a person lying there dead--more aware of her life. I find myself expecting her to get up and become alive again. Before she jumps she is just a little black dot. It is an amazing picture to me because it so explores death and life and I don't know how she got the death scene, the body lying broken in the front of the picture, to make one more aware of life and it's depth and consequence, but she did it.
So, I am ambivalent about Frida.

I'm lame to admit this I know, but I didn't really have a strong appreciation for her work until I saw the movie Frida. I know it was a Hollywood-ized story, though I think the movie did a good job of capturing the concept behind her work which I find really powerful. Her subject matter is such a strong reflection of herself and so conceptually rich (something I find appealing in various artistic media), and because of that I have a great appreciation for her work.

She did some excellent work, very self-conscious. Some people have called her vain, or obsessed for using herself so often as a central image.. I think she was just letting it all out there for anyone to see.
I remember reading that someone called her work "biographical", which I think is very accurate, her paintings read like a complete story.

My wife and I took a trip to Mexico City to visit her house. It was an incredible experience! You can see the paintings she produced while taking powerful pain killers before she died. Did you know that her ashes are stored in the room she slept in? The experience was a tremendous thrill!

I had to do a translation about her from Spanish to English for college class. Some of her paiting are very odd , but I like "Over there hangs my dress". It has a very powerful message, and I enjoy all the details she put into it.
