First off, I have been there and it took me help to get back. I would think that you letting her know that you really care about her and are worried that she might have a problem. Tell her that she is open to talk to you about anything that she is thinking and feeling. There are so many deep things that could be causing her depression or maybe she just doesn't think that she can talk to people about it. If she is not comfortable about talking with you, let her know that there are millions of people with her problem and that there is no shame in talking to a sociologist (they assess her problem first and if they can help they will). If they can't then they will refer her to a phsycologist. (My first step was my family doctor but I didn't find him of much help cause he just wanted to try me on different pills all the time and by then it was too late as I ended up taking an overdose and almost dying). It is better if she goes for help on her own cause if she gets too bad and has to be put in hospital against her will, they don't let you out until they think you are better which is depressing on its own.
Has she lost enyone close to here in the past? Is she a drinker or other stuff? Does she have work or any interests to keep her busy? The best thing you can do is talk to her, that may be all she needs. But if she needs more, then you are her best friend in the world to get her the help she needs. All the best of luck to you both. Sincerely, Linda

When you talk to her just say things that you think would cheer her up, but if the depression is really bad and you noticed. Then, you should try to talk her into going to a doctor.
