I challenge your question. If you can provide me with a paragraph and line number from an AR where it says you can not keep stuff in your pockets I will mail you a 25 cent AAFES Pog.
There are a lot of things that are just done in the Army with no regulation to back them up. Look at the haircut regulation for males "above the eyebrows when combed" have you ever seen someone with hair that long?

In the AF we use our pockets.. Silly Army folk!
I think the intent is to keep you from filling them up and looking like your smuggling pillows all day. I'm sure you are allowed to put a wallet or coins in there. That or else every Army type person I've ever seen is in violation of the Regs...

The pockets are for when you are in the field. Extra Ammo, Rations, and first aid supplies can be carried in the pockets to make them more accessible and quicker to get to for the individual.

the first one was perfectly right, its the difference between garrison and combat zone the pockets are for stuff in combat zones and field duty. The air force has to allow them to use their pockets in garrison cause they are never in the field of a combat zone...silly air force

The original design was for them to hold MRE's (one in each pocket) but it looks "unprofessional" to have pockets loaded with stuff when your not in the field.

i don't think the AR says you can not have things in the pockets. the pockets can not bulge because of what you put in them.
