Twice a year, a female dog comes in heat. Heat is the term used for the time when a female will breed with a male dog.
During the time a female is in heat, she will only breed for a few days and then she will begin to go out of heat. During heat, the female dog will bleed like a woman does during her monthly cycle. I hopes this answers your question.

It's the time that a female dog is not only most likely to get pregnant, but also when she is most likely to allow a male to breed with her. Sometimes she may allow several males over the course of several days to breed with her. And for a reason I don't think anyone can explain with certainty, male dogs for miles around seem to instinctively know the female is in heat and will go to great lengths to get to her. By the way you are not stupid, you asked this question and that shows you are smart enough to know you need to understand this.

being in heat is basically the dogs period. however they can NOT get pregnant while in heat. Until they've stopped bleeding, about 1 week after that they can get pregnant. If you Don't plan on having puppies have your dog spaded early when they are little is cheaper and easier and having a dog in heat is a pain. Casue they either have to stay outside or wear a doggie diaper. And even when they are outside it's a mess.

What it means when a dog is in heat is that the dog is going through it's menstrual cycle(period). A dog goes through this 2 times a year and is the only time she can get pregnant.

Ironic. The original term probably meant "frenzy" but in modern era it is the SAME as you.

The temperature of the Vagina gets about .5 degree warmer during ovulation!

So, today, being in "heat" is literal! It used to be figurative.

You go into heat to! Get a electornic thermomenter and stick in each day. You will see it rises two-three days a month. That's when you are knock-up-able!

It means that a female animal is on her period. You're not stupid. Maybe you're just into animals or have noticed one menstruating. Lots of people don't know. You wouldn't believe how many people go into vet clinics and are upset because their pet's suddenly bleeding from her genitals. You learn something new everyday! Peace and Best!

It means the dog is ready to breed. A female dog will have a swollen vulva and bleed when she is in heat and ready to breed. Please be a responsible pet owner (if you are a pet owner) and have your dog spayed. There are too many extra puppies at the local pounds and humane societies.
