No, but parts of it are. It's not super dangerous but like any major city there are certain neighborhoods you don't want to be out in at night.

Places around the area like Compton and Ingelwood are some of the more dangerous. But again it all depends when you're out. The odds of something happening are pretty low.

As long as you don't act stupid or go out in dangerous neighborhoods at night you should be pretty safe.

I have been to LA twice so far, obviously it has the big city problems like any other big city in the world. The highways are really bad, I was on a road trip from Seattle to San Diego last summer, and driving through LA was such an hassle. The highway signs aren't the best. LA is a city that has visitors from all over the world, probably hundreds of thousands people each year visit the city, and the city isn't even capable to put a freaking sign on the high way for Universal Studios. What a shame! Of course the city has more problems such as gangs, which I think lowers the quality of the city. Of course on the other hand, it has areas that are very nice, but over all I wouldn't want to live in LA, maybe on the beaches or something but definitely not the city.

I grew up in LA during the seventies. I'd visit my family there in the eighties and watch the 11 o'clock news spend 20 minutes covering all the gang shootings that day. It was easy to hate LA.

Since I'm an old guy now and I can go to LA with an adult perspective, I find that LA really has a lot to offer. The pace and the crowds really grate on me the first few days, but after that I adjust. In fact, when I get back home to Nowherewille, it seems like everything is boring, empty and in slow motion.

First, you must accept that everyone in LA is driven to the point of insanity. They are all control freaks, everyone is convinced they are the selfish master of their destiny and screw everyone else. LA is the land of opportunity where you make your own rules. And of course, it is third world as hell. The class struggle, the extreme spectrum of rich and poor is painfully obvious in Southern California. And no one with money has a lick of sense or taste. That's right. Look at the flashy crap everyone has. Everything is fake. If something were real, it would be immediately knocked down and a parking lot put in its place. I have to admit, I like a little tackiness, and LA is full of it. And even though California has this "laid back" rep, LA folk are the most uptight screwed down people anywhere. Their heads are about to explode. Yeah, they are. People aren't honking and screaming like they have turrets syndrome quite the way they do when they drive in LA.

If you can get over the depth of shallowness and fake tinsel of LA, it is a pretty decent American city with its own flavor. Smog? Well, yeah. But other flavors, too. Plus you see celebrities acting really annoyed all the time. I can't imagine a better place on earth. No, I'm kidding. But it's kind of like blue cheese. Sounds pretty disgusting, but you get an acquired taste for it. Sometimes nothing else quite satisfies.

I'm visiting my bro there in 3 weeks, haven't been in 9 years, we're going to the beach to surf and ride bikes and skate, and going camping.

So, my answer is that it will be what you make of it.

Sounds like you're moving there, otherwise you wouldn't be freakin so much. Be careful and stick to the things that you like, and you'll have a great time, California has so much to offer, you control if you like it or not, don't get caught up in the fake bs, enjoy the good stuff, there's plenty in CA and LA, if there wasn't, there wouldn't be so many millions of people living out there.

One thing I know for sure, Lake Tahoe is unreal.

Oh well, la traffic and gangs, is that news to you.

I was born and raised in L.A. and it had more negatives than positives for me, so I moved to the high desert. I think it's most hype that it's so great.
