tell him the angels came and took your dog to heaven today...

(but make sure you bury him first becoz i used that when my sons fish died and then when another fish died he took it out of the tank and hid it in my bedroom so the angels couldnt find it!)

DO NOT as some suggest try to sneak and replace the pet. Be real, are your kids idiots? Of course they are gonna know that this is not the same creature.

doing this will make the kid not trust you or believe what you say. death is a part of life. Tell you child wht happened to the dog. Tell them the dog is no longer hurting or lonley or sad and is having a good time in dog heaven. let the kid grieve for his friend and if he or she wants to then you get another pet. Ask first, the kid might not want another pet right away. You really cannot replace one pet, or friend or loved one with a brand new substitute and expect that no one will ever know. What will you say when the lie is discovered?

Tell him the truth. Assuming its a small dog, have a funeral for him if you want and help your son bury him.

Kids learn of death much earlier than parents appreciate through movies and tv, but only events like this can bring a real understanding of what it means.

Consider yourself fortunate that it is a dog and not a family member that you're going to talk to him about.

It depends on how old your son is and how mature he is. It may be a great opportunity to teach him about death and how life is a finite thing, and that's why we have to cherish it. Kids understand death, and most things, more than we give them credit for. Give him a chance to grieve - don't run out and try to replace it with another dog.

I'm very sorry for the loss of your family member.

OBOY - I guess it is better to learn at an early age, I know it was hard for me at 8y/o, but soon got to understand. Keep in mind, kids heal quicker than you think (we hope). Like the first answer - let him know he can get another dog. I would suggest taking him to your local shelter and let him pick one out. Tell him that he would be saving another dogs life and that your dog would have wanted it this way. Hope this helps...Good Luck.

Be honest, compassionate and loving. This will be a very hard thing for him and a loving mother can help ease the pain more than anything. I am so sorry for your loss. In time, I would suggest getting another dog.

Its not as bad as you think,Its life,Its will help your son to cope with human tragedy,You must tell the truth in a comforting fashion.I believe that after all the sadness that it with bring, he will gain power, then i`d go get him a new animal and explain how lucky that new animal is to have your Son in its life.
What a caring parent to ask the public how to help.Good luck.

When my pet died, my parents told me it went for a walk. Dumb, I know, but I was 2-3 at the time, so I believed it.

Just level with him and tell him that the dog went to doggy heaven and is with God and the angels now, and not to worry because God will take good care of him.
