it's totally condescending and unbelievably sexist...they're both terms of endearment one would call a child. the little things people say often reveal their true feelings, and i'd be willing to bet any guy that isn't a BF and is calling you honey or sweetie probably lacks respect for you in a few key areas

Down here in the South we do it all of the time. It's not meant to be condescending or disrespectful... if anything just the opposite.
We use expressions like "Darlin'" more so than "honey" or "Sweetie" though.

Well sweetie maybe they think it is a nice thing to say and they just want to be nice. (BTW I know more women who call other women sweetie or honey then men who do it most men are afraid they will be called sexist if they do and I think that is a shame)

I'M GUILTY OF THIS TOO!!!
I have been raised in the South with alot of good people and for the most part we feel like family. I know not all people are receptive to this and I honestly try to keep it toned down, but I do call men, women, children Babe, Honey, Shug and Dear - way, way too much.
I do not mean these words in a sexist way, they come from my heart and I mean no harm to anyone. I truly care for people, most all people and am only being my natural self. No one complains to me about this and I honestly do try to keep it toned. LOL!

I never call women sweetie or honey - I prefer stronger language - especially in bed.

It is even worst to have a rather young female call people that are her elders "honey" and "sweetie". My sister-in-law calls everyone honey and sweetie...EXCEPT HER HUSBAND AND HER SON!

It is a term of endearment, like when I call my male friends "bro" or "dood." If that offends you, the problem isn't with me being condescending, it is with you being too sensitive. Get over it.

There are only so many names that you can go by if you do not know the person's name.
You might get pissed if they said Hey Ugly.
