We've got geckos in our new place in Hawai'i. They don't bother me, but the cat loves them. Will she get sick if she eats them?

I live in the Caribbean, gecko's are everywhere and they're my cats favorite meal. It's fine, cat's won't get sick from eating them. The only thing that may be a problem is that lizards are intermediate hosts for a certain kind of parasite....a biliary trematode. Platynosomum concinnum. It migrates up the common bile duct of cats and matures into an adult in the biliary system. I'm not sure how common it is in the specific area you live in, but it is generally common in Hawaii, Florida and the Caribbean, so it's something to watch out for. Just keep an eye out for your cat becoming anorexic, getting diarrhea, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), jaundice(skin and/or mucous membranes turning yellow) and ascites(fluid in the abdomen).

But I wouldn't worry about it, it's gonna be hard to stop your cat from eating things like that, she's a cat, it's what they do. Just keep an eye on her and if you see anything out of the ordinary make an appointment with the vet, cause anything she's getting...it's a pretty safe bet it's commonly seen with a lot of cats in the area and your vet won't have a problem diagnosing and treating what's wrong with her!

I have 11 all ages breeds, and adopters. Over my 70 years of cat ownership, I know a mother s concern with newborns, teens, and aged pets. Each of mine has tried to eat or catch geckos, fish tank residents, assorted bugs, snails, frogs, toads and tried to eat turtles, squirrels, and rats, moles, and mice. They all experienced reactions of some type...the most frequently observed were foaming mouths, sore limbs, a bite or two on ears or back, and bruises after falling from the trees. The possum mom bit an ear on one cat still stupid enough to pounce, requiring a vet visit, but after 34 years with this marvelous vet and staff, we know which symptoms are worrisome, and which will resolve with time. Keep up on all well-baby visits and current on shots. All will be well. Get a glass of good sweet wine and relax!

My cat loves to eat them. It's gross, but she has never gotten sick. In fact she gets in a really good mood after her "kill".
