Not just finches but all caged birds because they feel so much more secure. My birds love it and only when i cover the sheets they come up to the swing and sleep so it become part of thier ritual.

When i had my finch if I covered him at night he would get really mad and instead of calming down he would chirp and peep all night so I think you should try covering him and turning off the lights if he acts up take it off and try without the cover on. Try both ways and do what works best

The Finches at my facility are left with a light on that I used to turn off on my way out , but they were never covered.

they like the ritual of putting on the cover at night. just look at them through the opening they're all looking at you. and then in the morning when you take off the cover, and suddently it's daylight. it's like you're the Finch God proclaiming another day. Another day to beep and eat.

From what I've read on the internet you should cover them. They're very susceptible to drafts and cold temperatures. Covering their cage at night could prevent them from being subjected to both.
If the links posted below don't have the answers just call your local pet store. Most of them are glad to answer questions on basic care for pets.

You cover birds to keep them out of drafts. Some people cover them to help them learn when it is time to go to sleep.

I would reccomend it as they have a flicker reflex whereas somehting scares or upsets them even at the least they will bolt. I would reccomend it as it gives them security
