You are VERY right not to want to get a small dog for your children for both their sakes. it would be very easy for your child to hurt the do who in turn may bite out of fear...and guess what is usually at bite level for little dogs?? the face of those precious children. if your kids are old enough to respect and care for a little one...that's different, but be wary. A boxer is an AWESOME dog for kids. my whole family has them and they are wonderful to every member of the family, and very protective of the children from things like snakes, other dogs, strangers...they are just a wonderful breed. i also have a pound puppy lab mix...and she's more of a dog for big kids....too rough for babies, but i don't know. you have to go w/ your comfort zone...but again...Boxer's are spectacular

Beagles are not good with kids(not great in general either)Most boxers are great but keep in mind this breed is proned to getting cancer. Goldens are wonderful. Boston Terriers are also great. No matter what the breed it will just depend on the particular dog itself and it's own temperament.
EDIT-I just read what Jill-o said and that is true-a ton of dogs of all different breeds get cancer but after working in the vet field for 7 years I can honestly say that if there was one specific breed to pick that seems to get cancer more often it is by far the boxer with golden retriever's a close second. Again though, I will say ANY breed can get cancer but certain breeds seem to be more proned to getting it unfortunately.

Stay away from aggressive dogs, like rotties, shepards, etc. Smaller dogs tend to be very timid when it comes to kids so I'd stay away from them too. Dogs like Golden Retrievers and Labs are great family dogs. They are energetic, playful and sweet. They will also be guard dogs because they are very loyal to their families. Another option is going to a shelter/pound where you can adopt a dog. It is a great feeling knowing that you are able to help out dogs who have been abandoned. They are complete with shots, have already been neutered/spayed, and go through a variety of tests to make sure what they like or don't like. Whatever choice you make, I wish you the best of luck finding the right puppy for you family! :)

I've got a Jack Russell. He's really smart, funny and has a personality all his own. He's small enough, won't knock down kids etc. no slobbering, not a yapping dog. Some Jacks are jumping dogs though , thank God mines not. They are a really popular breed. We're looking to get another little dog next but we're gonna try a miniture daschaund.
good luck
And if the kids are smaller you'll get stuck caring for it so you should get one that's easy for you!

Get a chiuaua. I have one and kids love them. They really like people too. They are pretty expencive so I suggest get a mixed breed for a few hundred dollars. Pure breeds can get up to $5000! If you really want your kids to have fun get a chiuaua-doxen mix. Tell your kids its a chiweener. They'll spend half the day talking about it 'silly' name. Like chiuauas, doxens(weener) are also really fun. If you want a inexpencive pure, get a weener, they not as expencive as chiuauas but they are a little bit more playful and if they feel dangered they WILL bite. My friends weener bit him so hard on of the dogs teeth fell out, it was just 3 months old though and they are still really fun. I hope you get a good dog. Good Luck

I've had recent experience with my 18 month old grandson and a Jack Russell. The Jack Russell has not been around children at all in her 2 years, but she was absolutely wonderful with my grandson. She was playful, yet protective, even when he would grab at her and take away toys from her. I had a poodle who was an older dog by the time my grandchildren were born. She eventually tolerated my granddaughter, but not after snapping at her several times. She would never bite her but I think she was too old and didn't want to be bothered with kids.

My family use to have 8 generations of Boxers. I would trust them with any kid. As long as the kids respect their nature. They can be very loyal & friendly dogs....So go get em. OH but keep up with the training, they can be a hand full at first, but not too hard to train. Very smart dogs.

We got a black lab puppy at 6 weeks old and we just love him. We have two young kids and he is very good with them. He is a little hyperactive so as he is growing, he can knock down the kids. They are usually very smart dogs though so it doesn't take a real long time to train them to do and not do different things.

a chihuahua is the best choice!they are playful, protective, and a family dog!Make sure if you have wild kids or kids under the age of 7 that you if you get a puppy, always supervise the kids and the dog,as well as make sure you get a regular size chihuahua as small kids don't do good with minatures and toy sizes,i have 2 chihuahuas and 1 mini. chihuahua, and they are the best pet!remember to make a good choice when buying a new pet for your family!
