By any chance, did you change out any hardware from your computer? If you installed something that 98 can't read (like something made for newer computers, I believe it will have a problem with it. 98SE has many drivers built in it - and if it's all the original hardware, it should load the drivers. Sometimes there are 'non-microsoft' 3rd party drivers that are not part of 98 that have to loaded separately.... but it shouldn't cause a hang. It just won't work until you load the proper driver. 2)The other thing is that maybe you should just reformat your hard drive. If the computer is old, you may have some disk errors that need to be fixed. Formatting usually will hide the errors. You also can try going to your hard drive manufacturer and usually you can download a test onto a cd or floppy that will test the hard drive for errors. Could be a couple of problems like that.

Make a dos boot disk then enter:

format C:\ /u

that will unconditionally format the C drive and erase any errors that might be occuring.

You really shouldn't be running Win 98 in this day and age though. You might want to take a look at Ubuntu for a good Linux distribution that is easy to work with.

Windows 98 will probably just keep crashing and you will get reamed with spyware and the like.

If you are re-installing a previous installation, rename the old windows directory first, then re-install. This will require you to re-install all previously existing software again however.

Abort. Restart the computer (pull out the power plug if you have to) and re-install.

Reformat the drive and try again. Low level format if possible. You probably have a bad sector.
