We have been having a heat wave and I make sure he has water but it seems like its getting worse. He is laying on his side with his mouth open panting and his whole body is shaking.

My cat is an indoor cat. I have had him for about 7 months and he is about 1 and 1/2 years old. There are no vets open at this time of night. I plan to take the cat to the vet ASAP but I wanted to know if anyone had experienced something similar and could speculate on what it might be in the meantime.

Well, it does sound like your kitty is overheated. You can place him on the cold floor. (In the kitchen or bathroom.) Then get a damp wash cloth. Be sure that the cloth is wrung out very well. Gently pet your cat wiht the damp wash cloth. Don't do it long because you don't want your cat to get chilled.

Or you can place ice in a bag and place a towel over it. Apply some pressure to it so the towel becomes cold and place your cat on that.

Again when your little one stops panting just take the ice out from under the cat and leave it be.

Be sure that it has fresh water. I like to place ice cubes in my cats water. They love it too. They get a play toy and the water gets cool.

NOTE: If your cat doesn't stop shaking or panting, you may want to contact your vet. Just suggest what they think.

Sorry but you just did not give enough information. Is it a new kitty that you brought home? Did you take the kitty out in the car and returned home and it started? How long has it been panting? Was it outside and perhaps smelled something ODD or disgusting such as an old water hose that it might have gotten its nose into? Is the place where he is terribly hot? It sounds as if it could be a or nearing a heat stroke..... meaning it should have ample water and in a cool place... Is it possible that it could not get to the water to drink? If this MIGHT be the case, and it is NOW on its side and unables to move, then using an eye dropper might be good to give it water.. a little at a time but not too fast to choke it.. You just did not give enough information.

Your cat seems to be really sick. I'm thinking either some sort of heat stroke, or there's something toxic in his system. I don't know what to do as far as home treatment for toxins goes, but if it's heat stroke keep him cool and give him plenty of water.

Are you sure there's not an emergency number you can call for a vet? Anyways, good luck and hopefully your clinic opens soon.

This is a problem if it is what I believe it is. I had a cat about 3 months ago with the same signs and symptoms. I took her to the vet and they gave her a feline aids and leukemia test and turned out that she was born with the disease. I had to have her put down if this is the problem I am sorry. Along with the panting there was a great deal of weight loss over a period of probly a month.

It sounds like your cat may have ingested something toxic. He needs a vet. Sorry to give you such an obvious answer but that's the only good answer anyone can give you. If you know that would be the obvious answer why ask it here? You should have taken him to the vet already.

He is most likely having a heat stroke. Get him to the Vet immediately. Just because you put cold water down doesn't mean that it will stay cold. In thses hot temperatures no animal should be out in it. Good luck. I hope the cat will be okay.

hmm your pet is having problems functioning...and yahoo answers is the only place you'll accept info, as a "vet" isn't considered a "real" option. Do I have that right?
I don't think the problem is quite with the pet. I think you are suffering from mild heatstroke, as no one in their right mind would sit there and type out something on "yahoo answers" and wait for an answer while their pet is probably dying. I would suggest drinking water slowly, and get yourself to the nearest clinic or hospital. Don't attempt to drive yourself, but take public transportation and by all means make sure to take your pet with you!!

and whats wrong with "TAKE HIM TO THE VET"?

there are lots of sickness it could be or poison

there is NO WAY anyone here can give a diagnosis or offer help for you or your cat

you should be aware that failing to take a sick/suffering animal to a vet is an illegal offence and you could be charged with neglect so please get off the internet where you wont get really good help anyhow and TAKE HIM TO A VET
(that is real information)

If he was outside, he could be having a heat stroke, or as someone else said, could have been poisoned. Whether you like it or not, he should be taken to the vet. If not, he will die. I have also heard of animals acting like this if they are electrocuted. Check for any frayed wires. But then again, he needs to go to the vet.
