A "commando" is a term used mostly for special unit(s) that served in World War 2 and were known for quick infiltrations of enemy territory raids on military or industrial targets and quick departures. They are the forefathers of our modern special forces/seals/etc... with many of the same objectives, but our modern "commandos" have different specialties and missions depending on branch of service, and other skills and training. Some are used mostly for reconnaissance, some for sea borne operations, some for search and rescue behind enemy lines, etc...

The simple definition...a person specially trained to operate behind enemy lines. The british were the first to use the name I believe. The first real American commandos were army rangers. Marine Raiders of WWII could probably be considered in that category also. Today all socom can fall into that category. Special Forces, Rangers, Delta, SEALS, Marine Force Recon.
