Well, the question you should ask I think is more like, why are you getting one? Do you want one for a pet, or a show dog? Are you going to breed her or stud him? I say $800 for a pet is not bad. If you want a show dog you're looking at probably up to at least $1,000 or higher. Hang with me here a second if you would. I'm sort of curious as to how you let a bunch of strangers convince you that a Maltese is the best dog for you? Easy people, don't get all crazy on me now. But think about it, this is an individual decision that only you can make. Of course I don't know what other choices there were if there were any. But, in deciding that everyone was right that this is the dog for you, have you thought about the life-style you lead, what sort of energy it is your looking for in a dog? Some dogs have more energy than others. I'm just hoping your making the right decision because it's what you want, and not what others want for you. This is a dog that you are stating your going to take responsibility for. After he's home, you'll need to walk him at least 20 to 30 minutes everyday. Every dog should be walked a minimum of this everyday. Dogs walk all day, that's what they do in the wild to get to their food/water/shelter. Humans took that away from dogs, (most of them anyway). So, it is now our responsibility to walk them. If we don't, then your going to have a very frustrated/bored dog, which equals to unhappy dog. Good luck.

Honey, I think 800 bucks is too much for ANY dog, especially since there are so many in shelters that need good homes. However, even if you purchase a pup, you can find them for less, because maybe they don't have papers or whatever. Just make sure that whoever sells you your dog agrees to take the dog to the Vet first to make sure that it is healthy, and has been wormed and vaccinated, especially if you plan to spend that much! Not only will you know what you are getting, but it can also clue the breeder in on a problem that ALL the pups they are selling might have (like worms). Any responsible, reputable person selling animals will have no problem with this. Oh, and lastly, a dog should not be a impulse buy, so don't let someone "convince" you to spend almost a grand on a dog you aren't sure you want. Think about it, you will own this purchase likely for 15 years! Anyway, good luck and if you choose to buy, I hope you have a good time with your new pup!

Maltese is normally cost from 1200- 2000 , however, if the maltese that you are getting is not register and is come from puppy mill or people just accidentally breed it, then 800 should be avg.

If you want a purebred, don't go to a breeder or a pet store. Pet stores buy from breeders, and there are hundreds of puppy mills out there. These breeders use their dogs for breeding purposes only. The dogs are kept in cages, are not handled, are not played with, are treated as things. When they are too old to breed any more, they're sold, too. But these dogs have no socialization skills, don't know how to relate to people or other dogs, don't know how to play.
If you want a purebred, go to Petfinders.com and enter the type of dog you're looking for. They have all types of dogs, including purebreds and designer dogs available through humane societies and rescue organizations.
That way, you would be adopting a dog who deserves a second chance.

I paid 1500 hundred for my maltese...so 800 doesn't sound that bad. But, check out some shelters. They have lots of dogs of every breed, age, size, color..you name it. They may just have a dog for you. So instead of spending 800, you may only pay a small adoption fee! Good luck!

wow! I think it is horrendous.. I would never pay even half that much for a Maltese.. You are besing ripped off. Why don't you go and get a kitty from the adoption agency.. Or.. look in the pet section of your local newspaper and give a homeless kitty a good home. They would make an even better pet than a higher priced one.. believe me. !!!

It depends on the breeder. That is an average price. You can get Maltese pups from 450 to 1500 sometimes.

depends on the quality and where you are buying from - if from a pet store that is too much - pet stores buy very low quality pups and mark them up high so they make a large profit - you should never buy from a pet store - you will always pay too much
if from a breeder (dog will have registration papers, be vet checked, vaccinated and dewormed) this might be a reasonable price - depends if the parents have been shown or not
point is NEVER buy from a pet store NEVER....(you can often adopt for under $150 if you look around hard enough)

Is it a puppy? If so, that is a phenomenal price, if the dog is papered and a great price if not. If a larger dog, then still a good price. II wonder why you want such a pricey dog, when your local shelter probably has some fine animals you could rescue.

Malteses are GREAT doggies! $800 is a little pricey, but they could have charged much more.
Good luck with her!!
