R. Lee Ermy was a GySgt and a drill instructor as a SSgt. After he retired from the military in the early 70' he became an actor, and played in films such as "The Siege of Firebase Gloria." He was hired as a technical advisor to the movie Full Metal Jacket, but just the actor just didn't get it.
With everything that drill instructors do, there is a point to it. The actor just thought that he had to be mean, and that was not, nor is not the way it is. So they asked Gunny Ermy if he would do it, he accepted, and the rest is hitory.

I know that he was at least in the marine corps. He was medically retired as a Staff Sergeant, but after the success of Full Metal Jacket was given an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.

Two tours in Vietnam, too. Medically discharged as an E-7, but made an honorary Gunnery Sgt for his work with toys for tots.
