I have just started to work-out and eat right. I am at 5'3 and weigh 265 pounds. I have a sedimentary lifestyle (stay at home mom). After 10 minutes on the treadmill at 2.5mph, I am pooped! I was a little dizzy. Is this bad or just how it feels to exercise for the first time in a long time? I want to do more, but I just can't right now. Any suggestions? Also, I heard that exercising 3 times a day for 10 minutes is like exercising 1 time a day for 30 minutes, is this right?

Your doing good! When you first start out you should start slow anyways so doing 10 mins is perfect, as you get going you will get use to it and do more. Just keep going up when you feel more comfortable..like maybe next week you can do 15 mins and keep going from there. Exercising 3 times a day for 10 mins is good as well. Keep it up and i'm sure you'll see results

No, it's great and a good start. It is also normal to feel that way at the start of a new exercise regime.

Yes, it is true that vigorous exercising three times a day for ten minutes is as good as exercising for thirty minutes straight. Some even feel it is better.

Get a heart monitor. Some treadmills have them that clip to your ear. Subtract your age from 220. Multiply that answer by 80 percent. That is your target heart rate. Example: I am 50. 220-50 = 170. .80 x 170 is 136, which is my target heart rate for exercise. Try to maintain your target heart rate for the full workout. People in strenuous training can go to 85 percent. People just starting can except 75 percent at first. If you are already exceeding 85 percent of your target heart rate, slow down the machine.

If a heart monitor is unavailable, you can check you heart rate by measuring your pulse for 20 seconds and multiplying by three, while you are still on the treadmill. Put one finger on the artery on your neck. A big clock with a second hand in your line of sight would be useful, however, it would be good to have someone with you while exercising, and they can time you on the seconds to measure your heart rate.

At this point in time, your heart rate may exceed your target heart rate until you get your vascular(blood) system operating well. If that is the case, keep doing what you are doing, taking notice of the heart rate, with the goal of getting in down to 80 percent. Also, if you smoke cigarettes, don't for at least thirty minutes before or after the treadmill, because it just hurts the lungs more.

It sounds like you are off to a great start and I wish the best to you.

Dizziness is normal if you're not used to a lot of physical exercise. Sustained exercise is much more beneficial for your cardio-vascular system than short bursts. Having said that, 10 minutes of exercise is always better than no exercise. Gradually work up to longer workouts over several weeks and keep up the good work. Average walking speed is about 5kmh [about 3mph].
Hope this helps.

I think you are very correct. I think that since you are 265 lbs and are heavy and haven't exersized in a long time means that you need to keep exersizing so that you don't get so unhealthy that you are dizzy when you are sitting on the couch watching TV.

My advice to you is keep exersizing, loose all that weight and drink water when you are finished...BUT when you are done with the 10 min work out don't just stop at a halt and be done you wanna take a SLOW walk on the tredmile for about 5 min to slow your heart down. I am proud of you for exersizing! Keep it up! -Sally :)

Yes, it's a bad sign. However, it's great that you've started to do something about it. Your stamina and endurance will increase over time. As 10 minutes caused you dizziness, I might lower the speed and continue to do multiple 10 minutes workouts a day. Increase your exercise load slowly.

Drink a glass of water be for each meal and after.
Good luck and check with your doctor to make sure you are able to do the exercises

If you have a lot of fat, then you did great, I congradulate you. But You should do 20 minute increments(instead of ten minutes) of excercising a day at least three times. If walking gets boring, do jumping jacks, when you get lighter, dopush-ups and sit-ups. And by the way, eating right does not mean starving yourself, it means you drop crap foods. Like cheese, and mayonnaise, and soda, then you will be fit after a while. Good luck
