Nope. That is what we fight for...the right to choose. That is what makes this country so great! In a time of crisis when the draft is need yes but at a last resort.

I think that the men in prison for things such as theft, minor arson cases, drugs, etc. should be given the option to serve in the military and go on with their life or to stay in jail and finish there sentence. This opens our jails for people who can't function in society and fills our military with people who will respect it (most not all) because it is there last chance. Plus they will have a little bit more under their belt to help them function in society, have some money to get them started when they get out or have the option to stay in and retire. But as for making it mandatory? No.

No, absoloutely not.
For one thing, the government cannot afford to put every age eligible citizen in to the service; even for just one year. The cost to train soldiers, marines, seamen and Airman is very high. Especially those of us with technical jobs and top secret clearances. To put everyone through military training would result in either an astronomical bill, or vastly decrease the quality of training given to the troops. Which is a VERY bad idea.

Also, the military does not function well when it's workforce is unvoluntary and does not care about successfuly completing the mission. On top of that, some people are just not cut out for the military. It doesnt do anyone any good to have some prissy guy who refuses to fire an m16, or a girl who screams and runs at the slightest hint of danger.

And finally, it's a bad idea because soldiers trust their lives to other soldiers. I don't EVER want to be in a foxhole with some random citizen off the street

In some countries they all ready do make
military service complusory. This supports
your country and gives you an opportunity
to develop some skills you wouldn't be able
to otherwise.

I am of 2 minds about this subject. on one hand compulsory service would insure that the US military had enough people to accomplish all jobs that were needed. It could also instill discipline in some of our less "Self motivated" people. On the other hand it also would lower the standards of what the military has become by being an all volunteer force. A smarter more stable and disciplined military force. To lower those standards to accept less educated or less motivated people could cause more casualties to its personnel in a future conflict because of the lower standards and less ability to use quality over quantity. Toss a coin to pick which is the lesser of 2 evils. Heads: Less people more quality, Tails: more people less quality... either way has its drawbacks and pit falls.

I think so, 1, everyone can see what it is like for themselve and quit bashing us, 2. it should give an individual more pride in themselve and their country. I see no reason why not to, but allow the person joining their choice of branch, even doesnt have to be military, maybe even something like border patrol or other protective federal jobs.

Yes. Maybe some of these young people would wake up to the fact of how to become a man instead of hiding behind drugs and do nothing but complain. It certainly helps separate the real men from the boys.

Yes. Everyone has an obligation to the Country. If you enjoy the good things here, you should have a responsibility to give in return.

That's called "slavery". Do you wish a return to that "peculiar institution"?
