Opinions on what to do please. Reactions welcomed too.

I have a couple of co-workers who are quite nice except for a potent flaw. They are constantly making unnecessary noise and are oblivious to that fact. They are constantly "clicking" retractible pens (like, a LOT) and it's making me a little crazy. They also tend to whistle and hum. Nobody else seems to notice it, but 30 clicks while walking the span of 10 feet (and in an open-office area, I might add). Some days it's okay, but not when concentration is required. I dont want to create a situation at work, but I may go nuts if it does not stop.

I understand just what you mean.I have a co-worker who sucks his teeth all the time.At first, it bothered me to the point i wanted to say, stop already, your getting on my nerves. But i knew if i said that there would be a problem.Ignoring him was hard, but i continued to concentrate on my job and did my best to block all noises out.Especially his teeth sucking. Now I've adjusted to it because i figured out what is more important.(My JOB).No doubt they do it to get attention from others, and they have succeeded in getting your attention. You do have other options, tell your supervisor, maybe they can speak to them about it,confront the people who's making th noises, tell them it bothers you when they do that.Maybe they'll listen and stop doing so much or stop all together, then maybe they'll do it more to annoy you even more.Block it out the best you can.Sooner or later one of the supervisors will get tired of it,then they'll have to stop or lose there job.

Well, don't leave a rude note, whatever you do. Maybe you can leave a nice yellow sticky note on the offenders' desks saying, "I've worked here for a while, and you're a great coworker and you're great at what you do. However, you're making it hard for me to achieve and do my job because you tend to make a lot of noise when I try to focus. I bet its just nervous habits, but the pen clicking, _____ (list a few - no more than 5 things) ____, is all breaking my concentration."

However, if you're not the note-leaving type, or you think they are mean enough to just make MORE noise, give a verbal comment. Say something like, " Man you guys, it's loud in here." Be kind of playful. If it keeps happening, add, " It's getting hard for me to focus, I'm one of those people that needs silence to think. I'd appreciate if you'd try to squeeze a stress ball or something instead of clicking your pen a thousand times as a nervous habit."

It's not that hard to talk to people and if you're kind of oddball humorous it goes off MUCH Better than being mopey and critical and woe-is-me.

That is VERY crazy! Why don't you get some of those Boise Noise Cancelling Headphones. They seem to work really well and it will cancel out all of that annoying noise from the co-workers. I don't even think you need to be listening to any music or sounds to even have the outside noise cancelled out. And they are lightweight and comfortable so you won't even notice. Good luck!

You may just have to create your own annoying sounds or habits. Picking your nose and wiping it on their desk usualy works really well. If that doesn't do the trick you may want to hang around a lot when you have severe gas.

There is this woman at my work place, shes in her 50's, and her favorite saying for everything, is, "Hmm, no s-h-i-t!" ... (Hospital environment) Hey Helen, you forgot to sign this, "Really" no ****"..... Helen, did you know that so& so is 10 minutes late for their appt.. "hmmm, no ****", ETC..... Well, the other day I finally said something to her, and told her that it was very annoying and not to mention, unprofessional, ..... And ya know what she said??????????????????

"oh ****, sorry"!! Needless to say, Id rather hear a pen clicking before I would "Oh/hmm ****" constantly..... Wouldnt you??
A supervisor eventually heard her, repremanded her with 2 days off of work.... she was suddenly more careful after that!
