She really wants to have a birthday party..I'm thinking we could just have close family over (& maybe a friend or two) for cake & ice cream. Last year we had her party at a campground and I let the kids stay all night after the party. It was fun, but I don't want to do that again. She wants to have a party at an indoor swimming place that has tubes, slides and the whole works, but it is a good 30 to 45 minute drive for most of her friends..I'm just not wanting to do much this year. Any suggestions?

Mom is a little "pooped" out..But I am the one that does all the planning usually (with my daughters help of course)..It's my husband that thinks she is getting too old for anything more than a party at home..I wasn't sure myself..I do know we should do something. They just grow so fast. I just wasn't sure how everyone else felt since a lot of her friends her age stopped having parties that include their friends.

NO NO NO I don't think anyone, including adults is too old for a birthday party. Since your daughter will only be a child for a short time more, why not give her a party.

If she wants in indoor swimming, agree but limit the number who can attend. Example, if you have a mini-van she can invite four other friends with you as driver and one other adult to help supervise.

When a friend turned 55, he had a party and invited/paid for relatives from other states and had friends from several states. We played games and it was all ages. And he added a special memory to his book of life.

I think this is a good time to begin the open communication lines with your daughter. Talk about safety. Talk about budget. At least talk because, after all, it is her birthday!

Birthdays are something to celebrate. Maybe another type of party could be a compromise. Allow her to invite five girlfriends for a slumber party and lots of DVD's and music.

It isn't too old to have a party! Never too old for some kind of a party!

Ask her friends parents if they would mind driving. Maybe you can get a few people to car pool and get everyone there.

Alternative, tell her she can have a sleep over or something at home and maybe do the swim party next year, or for her 13th - it's a big deal being a TEENager.

Don't do NOTHING or she will feel bad. She may feel like she isn't special to you anymore. When she is 14, you can start getting her more involved in the planning and it will be less work for you.

How about a small slumber party? You could take her and a friend or two to the pool and they could celebrate in small style with a movie night or mini-makeover. She's not going to be "little" much longer and there will be a time when you miss all the kiddie stuff that used to happen. Plus, she's at that teen age where it feels hugely personal and devastating when special things like her birthday are downplayed. If I were you, I'd fake it and let her live it up a bit... who knows, you may be in the party spirit yourself after a bit.

WHAT!? Different strokes for different folks - but some people have birthday parties on into their 90s!

Some people don't. As for me, I hate parties, never had one. But of your daughter has been celebrating her birthday up to 11 years theres no reason to stop now.

Unless she does not have any friends I would go ahead and let her have it. It does not need to be expensive or faincy. A few decorations, some music if she likes and if she wants to head up whatever no-expense (or low expense) games - great! Cake and Punch. Thats what a party should be.

You are never too old for a birthday party. She is at the age just for parties. If the pool isn't dooable just have a sleepover or something. Maybe you could invite just a couple of friends and take them to the pool yourself.

sounds like mom is pooped out! I know this feeling, why not have her invite 2 close friends over for a sleep over, have pizza and let them do their nails, have a movie night and do their own thing? My 11 year old loved it when I let her do this and the greatest thing is i didn't have to entertain them. the tube place sounds pricey and if itcomes right down to it take 1 of her friends with her. I would suggest the sleep over...

No, I think about 13 is probably the last party I had, and it was really more of just a bunch of kids at a rented movie theater.

we had just a couple of friends sleepover - took them to play laser tag then out for pizza - came home for cake and movies it was nice my son loved it and we didn't even do the family thing - everyone seems to be understanding that as kids get older they just want to do stuff with friends - maybe she would compromise and be willing to just take 1 or 2 friends to the swimming place...good luck...

She's not too big, and throw the party for her & her friends. Let them have their fun; her birthday is only once per year.
My daughter's 15, and she still has sleep-over B-day parties with her friends.
