Legally, civil union (popularly, but incorrectly called marriage) is choosing someone to be your next-of-kin, a very important legal relationship indeed. What the sacrament of marriage is and what it means differs from church to church.

"why marriage is needed?"
superbooks.org ANSWERS:
There are probably a hundred reasons or more to get married. I'll list some of them and the reasons, or explanations here but you'll have to do more research if you need more reasons than this.
1. Marriage is the ultimate committment that You can make with another human being. By being married you and that person are becoming FAMILY! Everyone wants their family and your person is not your (legal) family until you are married to them. Along with a marriage certificate you get and give many benefits when you are married to someone.
2. Your children are YOUR CHILDREN, and they are children of a legal marriage. (all children are beautiful) Your children from a marriage are covered for medical benefits and other things that children are entitled to. When you are married, the other person can give permission if there are emergencies -without having to have a notarized letter or lawyer letter. The marriage gives the right to that person to be legal guardian of those children (giving permissions for school or for medical purposes)
3. OTHERS, like ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends cannot deny your relationship and see and have outward proof that you are committed to ONLY one human being in this marriage relationship. Sometimes when people are only 'b/f or g/f" their ex-s...still hold on to the dream that perhaps they might still get back together with you. But with a marriage , planned and a certificate, a real family marriage, the ex will get the message that you are truly in love with only that one person for the rest of your life.
4. Your parents and your family will have to asknowledge that you are so serious about your relationship that you are both willing to take that next step --the marriage. So , in cases where families have been against your b/f or g/f , even though they still don't accept your union, by being married, you are saying to them, "HEY, I love this person, and I'm totally committed to this person, EVEN if you don't accept this person. we are married!" You are telling them, hey, it's time to give up the game playing and accept this person who is NOW a member of your family .
5. By geting married you are outwardly expressing the desire to share everything you have with this other human being that you love. You share expenses, and hardships and everything . And you are both willing to do this --and you show this by taking the very ultimate step in courtship --the marriage.
6. You can do things together that normally you might have a hard time doing together, like buying a house together, sharing insurance plans, buying a car together, just being united in all things the way famllies are.
7. If there is any medical emergency with your PERSON, YOU are the next of kin and the hospital MUST allow you in and must allow you to see your loved one. IF you are not married..the hospital can bar you from coming in, and you will not have any permission to be there for your loved ones in very important medical times.
8. School trips -- You are the SPOUSE once you are married. So if there is a need for someone to go on a school trip, either you or your spouse can go with the kids on that trip.
9. In New York State, getting married gives humans about 800 other rights that they normally do not have if they are not married.
10. A perfect reason to get married is because one or both of you WANT to get married. YOu both agree to do it and that's the most perfect reason to marry.
11. By getting married, your person is no longer an 'outsider' but a real legitimate member of the family. That's second most perfect reason to get married.
12. DISEASE --- Believe it or not, you can prevent yourself from getting AIDS and other diseases by getting married. How? This way... do you remember the the Montel shows where these boys got 10 women pregnant? Well, that kind of element where the boys date women, and tell the women that they are the ONLY ones and they tell the women false stories of how they love them, and the same time they are telling these fibs to 100 other women?
Well, you can outsmart these men by not having sex with anyone until you are married--legally married. These misfits that date to impregnant women will RUN the other way because generally they do not ever get married. So, you've got a better class of people to live with once you decide that marriage is for you.
By getting married , you outsmart the players and outsmart the misfits and outsmart the diseased ones because you are making a committment to JUST TWO People --- you and your ...person..and then to God.
So it pays to get married in more ways than one..and there are at least a hundred other reasons to get married.
