I have two male cats: one a kitten, one adult, and both are in good shape (not fat or too skinny). However, when either of them runs, an area below their stomachs that hangs down flaps in the breeze. What is that skin-flap-thingy called?

Thanks in advance!

that happens when a cat gets spayed/neutered. it doesn't matter how fat/skinny the cat is, unless they are skin & bones.......it is normal and wont affect their health.

Not all cats have this flap and a great number do. It is not necessarily related to being overweight. My five cats are very trim and several of them have it.

I think it might be because cats are descended from desert animals and, like the camel, they have a special feature (like the flap) which enables them to store nutrition for lean times. So those genes can be expressed in our environment though the flap no longer is needed.

"kitty beer belly... you should let you kitties have a cold one, unless they are over 21... would that be in human years or cat years...? "

I've had 2 cats who had this. The veterinarian said it was fat. They had been fatter, and lost a little weight. Nothing to worry about.

I affectionatly call it "fat fuzz"....both my cats have one --- the big boy has a LARGE area of fat fuzz and the girl has a smaller area (she's not really fat, just has the cat fat thing going)

It's called their stomach, but it's not unusual. Sometimes females get it if they get spayed young, but I have an otherwise thin male with one. It's their pudge a wudge...try not to stare.
