My cat jimmy has really long hair and keeps getting things caught in his chest/neck hair and I catch him chewing on it occasionally, can I trim his hair and whats the fastest easiest way to do it? I cant take him to the groomer because he would get very angry and I know theyd charge me outrageously...i only want to trim a little bit in that one spot

WOW thanks for ALOT of stupid answers... sedate my cat? my groomer wont do that and they told me at least $40 just to trim a few hairs. I'm not using trimmer because that would scare the piss out of him and I dont like being peed on.

yea u can cut his hair and the easiest way to do it is keep scissors with u and have him fall asleep on ur lap....while hes asleep gently grab the hair u want to cut....hell probably wake up so dont use the scissors yet...just hold the hair till he falls back asleep then u snip snip and u should be able to cut it like that

Yes. My cat has the same problem, especially now that it is summer and he sheds a lot. So every night I sit with him in my lap, brush out his fur, and with a pair of siccors, I cut out the clumps. If this continues to be a problem you can take him to a groomer and get his fur shaved. Petco does this pretty cheaply; I've done it one on my cat because he kept getting things caught in it. He looked pretty funny, and cute, with a big fluffy face, legs, and tail, but a shaved body.

The best thing to do is to buy your own clippers. They sell them at Petco, Tractor Supply, etc. You can buy whatever size blade you want, just remember that the larger the number is, the shorter it will shave the hair. I would say a 7 for your needs probably.
I work in a vet clinic and we do full shavedowns with a 10 blade, and our surgery blades are a 40.
And yes, it is fine to shave your cats hair. I wouldn't use scissors to do this though. Cats are to quick moving and it is easy to cut them.

Why not ? If it needs trimming or is matted> But cats usely groom themselves right! But if he's outside and got in a mess i don;t see why you couldn't trim him If YOU KNOW HOW and IF HE WILL LET YOU!! I coldn't do that to my cats!! They'd stracth or bite you!! I would take him to the Groomer Myself!! To be safe, just call and ask them >I bet it wouldn't be all that expensive! Good luck!

I'd just sit down with him play, get him good and comfortable and trim his fur. If he gets annoyed stop and try in about 30 minutes or so.

If your cat will allow you to do so, it will not hurt him for you to trim his hair. In fact, it may reduce hair ball problems.
Good idea to do it while he is asleep if possible.

If you want to, that's your decision. You can also keep him groomed by brushing him everyday and that would keep the stuff out too. Your choice.
