An ointment is for skin use only!! Unless the antibiotic prescribed is used for eyes (usually solution not onitment). Ointments are made of very potent (dangerous fungal chemical) that cannot be taken orally or applied to open surfaces (mucous membranes) as absorption is faster and easier and thus, you may be poisoned!! Remember antibiotics are made of fungi (plural for fungus) not the "guys who want to have fun"!!

regular triple antibiotic ointment is fine for cuts and abrasions, but DO NOT PUT IT IN THE EYE!! The only thing you want to put in the eye are medicines specifically designed for the eye. and frankly I NEVER mess with eye issues. How do you know it is a simple issue of conjunctvitis? it might be herpies or even a scratch. If you try treating with home remedies, you could do even more damage, and end up with a more expensive problem in the long run and risk having to have the eye removed. a vet visit is usually $20-30, and a tube of ointment is under $10 and the vet might want to prescribe antibiotics for another $10. Get them to see a vet for proper diagnosis and treatment. If you can't afford treatment for this, then how are you going to deal with their vaccines and neutering? it might be in their - and your - best interest for them to go to a rescue group or a humane society. Many do fostering of kittens that young. Call around and see what help is out there for them.

I had a pup with an eye infection and the regular triple antibiotic is what the vet told me to use. It cleared the infection with no after effects. I am now using it in a horse's eye, but am not sure if it's working for him. He seems uncomfortable with it. I am going to pick up Gentamycin instead; I know that's okay for the eye.

I've used it for years, put it in at night while you are sleeping. the ointment isn't as clear as the opto stuff. That's the only difference. if you use it at night it's not a problem. It doesn't burn or hurt your eye in any way.
Vets will tell you to use it in pets eyes.. Antibiotics are not for fungus either.

Because over-the-counter triple antibiotic ointment contains a preserative that is harmful to the eye but not harmful to the skin and is necessary to give it a longer shelf life.

Eye infections are nothing to mess with. An infection can quickly spread into the eye itself and cause blind spots or total blindness. It worth spending the extra money to see an eye doctor and use the ointments prescribed for you.
