You always take a chance on getting a virus when using a program like Limewire or other file sharing programs. The best thing you can do is immediately scan it with your antivirus program after downloading. Exe and zip files are just two different type of formats. Exe files usually refer to some video type of file and a zip file is usually several file compressed into one little package of sorts. To use it, you have to "unzip" it.

Limewire doesn't give you virus. Its the people who share files. You never know what you are downloading until you finish downloading the last bite.
Its not worth taking any risk because everything is available over the net without even sharing. Sharing is legal but what people share, is illegal, anyway.
But if you really wanna be on Limewire, then keep your antivrus update all the time. Before logging on, visit your antivirus site first.
Have at least 3 or 4 antispyware programs because one program never catches all of the spyware. And least of all keep your windows up to date all the time (meaning all patches first then Limewire).
Firewall won't help because you have to lower your guard in order to get to limewire.

Yes, there's a lot of virus that you can get from limewire, but it's also helpfull finding really good stuffs for free.
All you need to do is to have a good virus scanner, or an easy restore software(eg. promagic or deepfreeze)
Also avoid downloading a file with file size shown only less than 1000 kb, it is usually not the real file your looking for,
Example you are looking for an mp3, it should be 3 or more mb in size.
If your looking for a software, then look for an MB file size!

I have used Limewire for a year, and do not have a virus, but it is always good to have a virus protection on the computer.

Wow, you are going to totally infest your computer with viruses if you don't know what an exe file is....
.exe files are "executable" files. These files contain programs (not videos). If you are trying to download a song and see an .exe file, don't click it because it is a virus. .zip files are simply like little packages of files. To use them you must "unzip" them. Usually the .zip will contain a folder with some files in it. Again, if you are looking for songs, don't download a .zip file. The only files you should download as songs are generally .mp3, .wav, and .wma.

You could avoid it by not illegally downloading music. Music purchased legally from a legitimate website will most likely not have a virus.

avoid exe files. And avoid files that are obviously too small (eg. 20kb or 200kb).... I always sort by the file size then by sources.
Get a good free virus scanner like AVG.

And update regularly (or set to automatic)
