The spots are about the size of a dime and the are a dark brown color and are flaky. I can scratch some of the dark skin off but they never go away.

There is a fungal thing called tinea versicolor -- it causes dark spots that turn white when you tan. You can cure it OTC by soaking your skin in Nizoral dandruff shampoo for fifteen minutes for a few days. It's quite common. If the spots are splotchy, that would be my guess.

My daughter had the same kind of thing so we took her to a skin specialist who diagnosed a dairy intolerance. We cut right back on her milks, cheeses and yoghurts (but not completly) and problem dissapeared. Hope this helps.

I work for a dermatologist and suggest you see one as soon as you can. It could be something as simple as just a mole or birth mark. Or something as serious as melonoma which is a serious form of cancer. You best bet you to call and make an appt to be seen. If the doctor questions what it is he can remove them and test to see what it is. Its better to know then not to know.

I suggest you see a dermatolgoist because there are diseases that manifest this kind of reaction and we can not tell it unless you undergo few laboratory procedures and without seeing it personally. We can't just give you medicines which later is not the right one for your case. Hope this helps. God bless! ;)
