No Way, conscripted soldiers shouldn't be needed to defend a free country. And they aren't needed now.
We have 100,000 troops occupying Europe that have been there since the end of WWII. I think that war is over and they can come home. The only reason they are still there is to provide welfare to the socialist economies of Europe.
We have about 60,000 troops in Japan and South Korea. The troops in Japan have been there since WWII again WWII is over the troops can come home. The troops in South Korea serve no purpose as well. Starving North Korean's aren't likely to pull off an invasion of the south.
The only people calling for conscription are leftist who want to see rich kids in the military. Well I was around when they had the draft, rich kids went to college not Vietnam. Even poor kids like Bill Clinton found ways around the draft.
As for not being trained for combat, its true that 60 to 70% of the military are non-combat troops with jobs like truck drivers, mechanics, supply specialist etc. In the past most of the Guard units were designated for these non-combat missions.
But, all soldiers including Guardsmen must complete Basic Combat Training, including qualifying to use a rifle, before they do any other job. Just like the marines every Army soldier is first an infantryman.

No. Conscripts generally end up being the lowest common denominator in an Army if they are not fighting for a cause they truly believe in.
WWII showed what a motivated, conscripted Army can do.
Korea and Vietnam showed what a demotivated group of conscripts will do. (The same applies globally - look at Afghanistan for the Russians, various excursions for the Cubans, etc)
Desert Storm showed what a small group of dedicated volunteers can do, with clear goals and defined leadership.
The fact that we are doing as well as we are doing in Iraq (considering the scenario) is due to the fact that we are using a volunteer armed forces.
If we were using conscripted units there, we would already have sustained far greater losses.

Given the politics in the United States I doubt there would ever be a draft again unless a nation invaded us. Besides that It's a commonly held belief that a volunteer army is more motivated and likely more effective than one filled with conscripts.

Yes it will! The National Guard says they have had enough and are not trained for combat, and it doesn't look like Iraq will be over in the next 2 years! Start with the rich kids first. We need to get rid of a few of them! Who knows, we may be stopping another George Bush!

They ar calling up people from the IRR (Individual Ready Reserve), so a draft might happen... People who have been out of the military for 4 years are getting recalled back in, so it wouldn't surprise me if a draft occurs...

No it won't. The last draft took in people who could shoot and fight the old fashion way.
With today's weaponry, you need to be an above intelligent person with "balls" enough to not run from the enemy.
If your afraid of the draft, don't piss yourself, only the brave need to apply for the military.

No why should it? The USA only wants people that are willing to serve this country because they are patriotic not because they have to.I think the only way this would happen is if there was a serious world war. This foolish stuff that is going on now is not a world war.
