Ativan will simply relax you and allow you to be more calm than you could be without it. ativan is also prescribed to help with restlessness and lack of sleep. The major side effect is drowsiness, which you should not experience much at the dose you say you are taking.
Dead sushi is right, it is NOT a psychotropic drug, but a mild sedative.

Hi
I also take ativan ( mild sedative) for a panic disorder. 0.5 mg is a low dose. It will make you feel very relaxed and sleepy. Try taking it at night before bed until you get use to it. Don't take it and drive until your body has adjusted to its effects. Is ativan the only medication the doctor prescribed for the panic? I also take Prozac which is a great medication for panic disorders. The ativan will stop the panic for the moment but not long term. Once the Prozac is in your system 6 to 8 weeks you'll find your won't need the ativan as often if at all. Talk to your doctor if the only med he gave you is ativan its great for short term until the other medication kicks in but is addictive. Good luck I'm a medication tech and Mental Health rehab tech.

one Do not cut it in half .Your MD prescibed in 1 mg does for a reasom Ativan when used safely is not as addicting or dangerous as the anti drug fantics would likeyou to believe . .
When you frist take the med you w ill feel very drowsy and your muslcle might feel very relaxed. This is common. take the med a while before sleep to se how t you react to it eventaully you will buid up a tolarance to the side effects and also your panic problesm will lessen it is important to work with you MD about this though Some people with severe anxiety or a ral long standing problem with PTSD take Drugs like Ativan a benzodiaepaine for a long time and live sucessful reasombly normal lives that were not possible prior to the med .
do not fear you will become some wild eyed dope fiedn ther is not any evdnmece of hat if the med is used corectly . you might occasionaly have to increase the does but beyond that you will be ok .
listen to your docotor not soem rabid anti drung nut who does not have a MD or license to practice medicen .
yopur MD is much better in formed chedck out this
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/loraz.htm

I feel ur pain. I am just like you. People laugh when I am scared to take new things and I cut them into pieces but I feel it is a smart thing to do, and my husband agrees with me. You never know what a new drug is going to do.
I once took a drug that I broke into 8 pieces. When I took 1/8 of that pill, I felt very nervous. I never took it again. Now, suppose I had taken the whole pill..?
Just remember this--if it isn't a time-release pill, you can cut it in half. Then if you feel ok after 30-60 minutes, take the other half.
But...keep in mind that if you don't drink water w/ it, it may hit you too hard when broken into pieces. So, drink plenty o-water w/ it.
It wll probably be ok, but that is one way to try it. And try it preferably when someone is with you, and when you are at home and don't have to go anywhere like to work or something.
Good luck, dear...hugz.

It calms your nerves. Sounds like you could use it. It will also help you sleep. Relax, if your Doc prescribed it, You should be ok. DO NOT TAKE STREET DRUGS WITH THIS! Alcohol will increase this drugs effect too so stay away from it and don't drive while on the meds.

atavan is just a sedative, it's not an actual psychotopic drug...I think. I might be wrong. somebody can correct me.
when I had my first panic attacks I thought that I was really dying and when I went to the hospital they gave me atavin. it was wonderful, it totally chilled me out. but when i got home my mom confiscated it because she said that it was addictive. so i never got to use any more of it. one thing is for sure, it is a short term answer to your problems. it won't addresstghe cause of your problem, it will only sedate you once you start spinning out of control in the twirling, swirling horror that is panic. sooo....i dunno
