The Levites are the descendents of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob (also known as Israel) which then became the twelve tribes of Israel. (It almost makes sense doesn't it?)
In the time of Moses, the entire tribe of Levi were designated as Priests, with Aaron as their High Priest. There duties were to take care of the upkeep and transportation of the Tabernacle (the physical representation of God's dwelling place) and to offer sacrifices on behalf of the people. (Who, in Old Testament times, were unable to access God by themselves.)
The Levites still live to this day, as far as I know, but their office has become obsolete since the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who now executeth the office of Prophet, Priest and King for all people.

Levites were the Temple priests. Such names as Levine, Levy or Cohen are typical.
If you remember the one-handed "Live long & prosper" sign that Spock used on Star Trek, that hand symbol is stolen from the Levites!! If you go to a Jewish cemetary & look at the headstones & see that symbol, but done with two hands...it means a Levite is buried there.
They have discovered a unique blood marker in the Cohenim; proving they are the legitimate descendents of Aaron. The other two Levite families include Gershonites & Mororites.

The Levites were the priest tribe of the ancient Israelites. The tribal distinctions have since broken down, so although they may still exist as part of the Jewish nation, we have no way of separating the Levites from the other tribes.

The levites are one of the twelve chosen tribes of Israel. Yes, they still exist, but, they are slowly dying out. I am one and I never thought that some one else would even know about them. I'm intigued and alittle shocked. I'm still young so maybe, i'll get to see some more before they're all gone. ~hopefully.

Yes. The decendents of Levi are still around. As are all of the 12 tribes... But only God knows for sure who is who and to what tribe they belong. In the Tribultion period God will call 12,000 from each tribe to Him and then send them out to evangelize the world during that 7 year period.
