The boy I babysit will be two in Sept, and he can play the harmonica. I mean PLAY it, not just make noise. He knows how to move it across his mouth making the different notes. He has SID with signs of autism. Nobody has worked with him on this, he just picked it up and started doing it. Developmentally, for those who know, is this normal, or an amazing talent?

oh, believe me, it's being encouraged, we're just in shock that it's happening. No, he has NEVER heard or seen anyone play it. He's only at home and my house, and there are no musical instruments in house. That's what is so strange to us, that he just picked it up and started doing it. And it has a very calming effect on him, it's so cool to watch. We're just trying to determine if this is related to the autism, or if a lot of kids his age can do this, but we just haven't run across any.

My daughter has been playing the harmonica and making actual music on it since around 22 months. It's really neat, she dances at the same time. I think it's an amazing talent, I haven't heard of anyone else except this case.

Wow thats amazing. no I don't think thats normal. I mean children don't get an intrest in musical activeity until at least the age of 6. even if the instrement is as simple as a harmonica.

My 2 1/2 year old plays one and has for some time. I think it's normal which I'd say IS advanced if he has developmental problems. Encourage it and offer him a few other instruments. Tamborine, kazoo, recorder/flutophone, drums, trumpet, etc. Let him enjoy it. :)

actually it;s amazing - we underestimate the talent and ability of small children my son will be 3 on sunday and for the past 2 years he's had the uncanny ability to make music by making his own beats, actual rhythm in dancing and singing most people who see him do this are amazed!

I don't see anything wrong with it, my hubby was whistling like a bird long before he could ever talk.

I say encourage him this is his way of expressing himself.
