I have a female cat who is about a year old. The whole time I've had her she climbs up in my lap and sucks on my shirt (only if it's cotton) like she is feeding from her mother. I was told that it was because she was not weened properly when she was a kitten, but I'm all out of ideas on how I can get her to stop. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

She's a wool-sucker. And it's right about her being improperly weened. Just a soft tap on her nose followed with a "No" and eventually she'll understand. Most cats do outgrow wool-sucking, some won't. Even dogs weened too young will do this too.

High fiber cat food that provides the same tactile experience that sucking on cotton or wool gives is a much better alternative. Most cats stop sucking on fabric and eating plastic when they are given food to really chew on.

I’m not sure if your cat would still suck on your shirt if you put some strong chili sauce on it, but in case she does, she might not like the taste of it and forever stop from sucking your cotton shirts. You might want to give it a try.

How adorable and annoying!

I'd recommend getting bitter apple or some sort of bittering agent made for cats. Put it on a part of your shirt and offer it to her. After a few times, she'll probably get the message that shirts taste nasty.

Good luck!
