The mothers light the candles at the sides at the begining of the ceremony, then the bride and groom use those side candles to light the unity candle in the middle.

the moms light the separate candles [we did this before the ceremony], then the bride & groom use those candles to light the single unity candle (usually some time during the wedding ceremony) :O)

When my dad got married his Mom lighted a candle and his wife's mom lighted a candle. So the answer is the mom's of the Groom and Bride.

those answers are right and it is up to you but if you mothers can't be there for any reason then have some one light the side candles for you before hand and then the two of you light the unity candle i have photo you can see on my im if you want just im me and yon can photo share and see the lighting of my unity candle we just got married 7/7/06

well the moms usually light the two single candles and then the couple lights the one in the middle after saying there vowels. its showing that the two of you are becoming one in unity. that is way it is called the unity candle.

The husband and wife light the candle to represent the unity between you and your husband. Really has nothing to do with type of religion. Represents the unity of man and woman.

My mom lit the unity candle and gave it to me, my husbands mom lit his and gave it to him, then we lit the candle together. I've seen the moms do it as a symbol of the two families coming together. Whatever way you want to do it is what you should do.
