What they all said. A good reason to wait is it means the charcoal lighter fluid has been burned off, or if the coals you bought are self igniting, same thing. Otherwise whatever you are barbuqueing will have the lighter fluid taste.

There should be no black left on them...orange/firey (but NOT flaming) in the center, covered completely with a layer of gray ash on each coal.
