We had a raft of folks over for a Lammas feast the other night and we got into an interesting discussion. The question was...

What is the difference between erotic art and pornography?

In a weird sort of way this question belongs in religion and spirituality because it seems like ones religious persuasion will have an affect on ones answer.

I think they differ in their intent. I think with erotic art it's more of an appreciation for the human form, and with porn...well, it's intent is more so to get it's viewers to reach climax. There IS a very fine line though...this is a good question.

Intent is the real difference. Definitely not judgment. Someone might judge erotic art to be pornography due to lack of experience, or inability to understand the original intent. But yeah, the truth behind expression lies in intent.

"Erotic art" means "i just read it for the articles". This is what artists did before photography, they would make a living by selling nude "art", since painting landscapes wasn't enough to keep them alive but as there were no "articles to read", they would make up the same idiotic stories that it was "artistic" so the wives wouldn't catch on. People have been swallowing it hook line and sinker ever since. It is porn when it is hidden, its erotic art once it gets found.

The art is art that stimulates. It is expression that has the erotic part as not being the goal, or point. Porn is to get you hot, that is it.

me and hubby have this discussion all the time because of his " art " collection lol
actually the pictures he has are very beautiful and i have to admit even he says sometimes they show too much for his particular taste in erotic art
i think the difference lies between " admiration " and " stimulation "

Semantics. The same difference between gambling and gaming. If something reeks, calling it by another name makes no difference, it still reeks.

There is no difference. It's all porn.

I suppose "what you call it" could make it different... like the difference between acetylsalisylic acid and aspirin...
