First of all, understand that he's a puppy. Puppies have the attention span of a gnat. Expect that to keep up until he's at least two or three years.
I've found the best way to really impress upon the puppy which behaviors I like and which I don't is to praise him (no treat yet). Tell him to sit. Push his butt down when you say it until he does. Now praise the crud out of him. Make a HUGE deal. Puppies LOVE attention, and he'll do that again if it gets him attention. Repeat this as long as it takes until you can get him to sit without having to press on his heiny (even if he only stays sat for two seconds).
That's Training Day 1.
The next training session, remind him how much you love him when he sits (if you're clever, you'll start working Stay into this lesson too). As he sits for you more reliably, THEN start integrating treats. Now you REALLY have his attention. I find training with both treats and praise, not just treats, makes the dog realize that this is good behavior, and he shouldn't necessarily expect a treat for doing what he's supposed to (but that doesn't mean he can't hope there's a treat every time).
Now, just repeat and reinforce this training at every opportunity. Maybe you don't have a full hour to spend extolling the benefits of Sit to your puppy, but maybe when you're feeding him, hold the bowl, tell him to sit, and only give it to him when he does (feel free to press on his bottom if he needs a gentle reminder for those interim reinforcements.). Same with toys. Let him know that you won't throw his favorite squeaky toy until he doees what you ask.
Make sure you always use a firm tone when you're giving a command. It can be friendly, but you must sound like you mean business. You're the alpha dog in his pack, so you need to sound like it.
Good luck, and enjoy your pup! Shelties are VERY smart, so I'm sure he'll be doing great things for you in no time!

I am an expert championship dog trainer in the AKC. So I will teach you how to make your dog do the three basic tricks. It is pretty simple.
Sit:
Hold a treat that Rocky loves up above his nose. Start pushing the treat toward him so he will scoot back and sit down.
Lie down:
When Rocky is in the sit position, hold another treat that Rocky loves up above his nose again. Start lowering the treat downward to the ground and slightly to him. If he cannot reach the treat, he will eventually lie down on the ground.
Stay:
Hold up your right or left hand to his face and repetitiously say stay. If he moves, say wrong. Count to ten out loud and if he doesn't move give him a reward.
Practice these three basic treats about 5 minutes a day. Don't do it too much or Rocky will be stressed out. Hope this helped!

Well, when I was training my chihuahua for a dog show, it took about six weeks just to get him to sit, lye down, give me a high five, jump through a hoop, and what I like to call "balarina dance." Which is where he just hops on his hind legs while spinning around in a circle. And belive me, chihuahuas are the hardest and most stuborn type of dog to train! That's because they're so hyper all the time. Belive it or not, all that hard work and paitence was worth it. He had won first place. You need to start off with saying the command and sticking with it for a while, otherwise, your dog will get confused. Then, you need to show him how, belive it or not. That way, the dog will get an idea of how to do it. But remember if you really want to get that trick to work, then you need to really STICK TO IT until you get it down. Once you have mastered one trick, you can go on to another. The best way to train a dog is when it is young, so it will be able to comprehend more as it gets older. If your dog won't sit still, then make sure not to get him distracted from his work. (Doing tricks I mean.) You need to make sure he is calm and relaxed and not too anxious or exited. So you see, even with the most hyper dog, all you need is alot of hard work and paitence, and you will succeed.
Hope I helped!

Spend the time and money - take him to puppy obedience class. He will learn to be a good dog, you can learn to be a good pet owner and Rocky will get to socialize with other puppies and their owners. You will only get out of Rocky what you put into his training now. BTW - shelties make great agility dogs because they are so energetic.

There is a great book called "Puppy Preschool". I loved it.
Another good one is "Dog Tricks for Dummies" it has obedience training in the first few chapters. Great no non-sense book. Easy to read and follow. Also has activities and contests you can enter in the back. Very helpful.
I recommend obedience training for every dog. Classes teach you how to train the dog so that both of you are not driving each other nuts.
Be firm,
Be consistent
Remember that he is still a baby.
Good Luck.

sit-Get a treat or a piece of his food and hold it in front of his nose then slowly raise it up until he sits and as soon as his but touches the ground tell him to sit. Just keep doing this and he'll learn. That's how i taught my 11 week old puppy to sit.
Lay down- do the same thing when he's sitting down just bring the food down until he lays down.

well you need a training collar first. they're sometimes called choke chains although there is another version that works differently that wont do any damage to the air passage. to teach sit you say sit and then pull up on the leash and push his butt down into the sit position then you say good sit, Ok, and then give him lots of praise. down is similar you need to put him into the position so that he knows what to do.
For stay what you need to do is sit him or down him and then tell him to stay then you walk out in front of him and face him. the second he moves tell him no and then put him back into the position then go again. if you practice you can work up to going longer distances for longer periods of time but you need to work your way up carefully. if you want him to come to you say come and then praise him if you want to go to him then simply return to him but make sure he doesnt move until you get to him
what you need to remember is to always praise your dog and say ok to sort of temporarily release him from your command. be consistent and keep practicing and you'll do fine

With sit, you press down on their backside while saying "Sit!" in a firm, authoritative voice. When they sit, give them lots of praises and pets.
Lay down and stay are basically the same. To lay down, you tap the floor in front of his face and say "Down!" Maybe push down his body if you have to. My dog learned it this way. She is a Boston Terrier and very smart.

Yep, they're high energy dogs, you can use a choke collar (it's the pressure on the throat a mother dog would use to discipline a pup) to train the pup to listen, then plenty of praise when he/she does good treats (chopped liver, bacon, cheese too)
