i got a perm on tuesday morning and between now and then i rinsed it with tomato juice (to get the smell out), and rinsed it in the shower with cool water twice. i am afraid i have relaxed it too much! i know all about what happens to the hair during a perm and why you can't wash it but how is rinsing it?

OK so, wetting your hair is FINE!!!! Everyone perm will relax over the first couple of washings, there is nothing you can do about it.
if you feel that you have lost a large amount of curl go see your stylist, if she is reputable she will guarantee her work, but most likely you just are experiencing what is normal with perms. trust me I have given HUNDREDS of perms, and gotten a dozen or so myself.
When you style it, try using a special gel or mousse designed to enhance curl and dry on a med. heat with a diffuser attachment.
good luck Hun.

The water isn't good, but it would seem to me that the tomato juice made things worse. Some people use tomato juice to get rid of green stains on hair from chlorine pools. So this suggests that tomato juice penetrates the hair to some extent.

The bonds of the hair are fragile right after a perm. I think it's possible that the water weight on those fragile bonds, coupled with the action of the tomato juice weakened the perm even more than the water alone.

If you're not doing anything tonight, try setting your hair on the tiniest rollers that you can find and let it dry naturally on the rollers. This may not work, but depending on your schedule, it might be worth a try.

u messed up. not much you can do now. the rinse thing is not true its not the water at all. i don't no why so many people say that.... you can rinse it . its the shampoo and conditioner that do the damage. just like it was the tomato juice that screwed you up. styling products would have easily helped the smell. ABBA has a styling spray that works great for after perms live wit it , or pay to have it fixed. someone took a lot of time. so you should pay to have it fixed. good luck!

It's the water that does the damage and relaxes the curl. And putting tomato juice on it would only soften it more. Tomato juice is to get rid of skunk smell, not perm smell.

Next time, see if your hairdresser can use a different perm. I've had perms that had no smell or just a pleasant apple fragrance. They don't have to have that chemical smell.

Rinsing is fine. You can even put products in it, just dont shampoo for 48 hrs.I shampoo the day of because the smell keeps me from sleeping. But I do it knowing it could get loose. I tell my customers to wait because some people have a harder time keeping the perm.

Its the water that deactivates the perm... even if you just dunk your head you amy relax the perm. You have to stay away from water all together for a little while!

I also got a perm on Tuesday morning, my stylist told me not to wash my hair till Friday morning, however she told me I could spritz it with a little water to revive it and to freshen my look, also she told me I could use my styling products, but absolutely no washing.

I don't think that you are supposed to do anything to it for at least 48 hours.

I had one and I know the smell sucks, but I lived with it for a couple of days so I wouldn't ruin it.

Ask your hairdresser if you should be doing something differently.
