hit and run, what would you do?
I had a guy that was "likely" an illegal alien, damage my property with his car and then drive off. I filed a Pol. Rep and then sleuthed around myself and was able to find the guy and fianlly got a cop up to confront the guy. He was the registered owner but said he had no insurance, he was unlicensed and spoke little or no English. The police cut him loose at first. I pitched a fit about it and after 2 supplimental Pol. Rep. and a argumentative conversation with a sargent, finally got the perp picked up. They towed his car and cited him for no license and no insurance. I got the distinct impression that they didn't want to get this person but because I pitched a fit, they finally nailed him. At least he's not driving a car with no insurance and not damaging others lives or property. Why did I have to work so hard to get the Police to do their job here? What if this guy was a terrorist? Seems to me he's illegally in USA. Shouldn't ICE b notified?

If they did not witness him driving the car they can not arrest on your testomony alone. ( or should not) They could present your evidnece to the DA and ask for a warrant or to issue a ticket to appear in court.

Unless the officer sees him driving, he can not be charged with driving with no licence and no insurance. ( at least in the states I have worked in)

The reason they would prefer to merely turn it over to the DA was because it takes one officer about 3 hours to do the paper work on the arrest, the bad buy will normally be out of jail on bond before the officer is done with the paper work, Or if the state requires them to appear in court the next morning, in which an officer may have to go to court in the morning on his day off,or on his moning when he is normally not working.

And local police do not inforce illegal immigration, even if he is illegal in the US, he may just be fined and let go, he will not be held for immigration. ICE does not bother with it, illegals are arrested and released by the 1000's every day.

Even the couple thousand arrested that made the news a few weeks ago, over 1/2 of them were just released on a ticket to appear in court in a couple days ( that part did not make the news)

You shouldn't of had to harp on the police about getting this guy. Maybe where you live it is hard to get a cop out there for "little" stuff. I know jails are filling up and that could be another reason. Maybe he slapped this persons wrist but that should be no excuse. Cops are supposed to uphold the law, not decides who is guilty or should be let go.

Well, the guy probably was an illegal alien and now they have to to hold him in your county jail until INS picks him up. This will cost your city or county around $40 per day until INS either comes to get him (unlikely) or his piddly *** sentence for backing in to your car is served either of which could take 90 days or more.

Your little vendetta just cost the county $3600 - not including the cost of a public defender, translator or medical care he might require in jail.

Thanks, heaps.
