Average income in the US? Depends on location and seniority.
Beginning police officer in a small town is in the low $20,000.
Big city police officer starts in the mid $30,000.
Beginning police officer in Oakland, California is $69,000, but with the cost of living there, it's not that much.

In GA and TN there are many working for about 6 to 8 dollars a hour, with no insurance. Some of the larger departments start officers at about 28K to 35K.
Average would be about the 30K if you consider those that have been there on the job for a while.

The income can vary dramatically. I am in northwest Arkansas. A deputy sheriff starts out at around $19K, a police officer - depending on the department - $21 - 26K.
Not nearly enough.

Considering that Police Officers are expected to die in our defense if necessary, whatever they're getting paid isn't nearly enough.
