A marketing plan consists of a step-by-step analysis to create a plan for a product or service that will help its marketability. It generally starts with brainstorming ideas. If it is for a product, who do you want to market to, how much do you want to sell the product for, etc. You then have to conduct a SWOT analysis. This determines all strenths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. After determining these factors, conduct an environmental analysis that will help determine where to sell the product, as well as distribution methods. If all else fails, go to a college bookstore and look up the information in any "Intro to Marketing" textbook.

A Marketing Plan is a written document that details the actions necessary to achieve a specified marketing objective(s). It can be for a product or service, a brand, or a product line. It can cover one year (referred to as an annual marketing plan), or cover up to 5 years.

A marketing plan may be part of an overall business plan. Solid marketing strategy is the foundation of a well-written marketing plan. While a marketing plan contains a list of actions, a marketing plan without a sound strategic foundation is of little use.
