third finger left hand until the day of the wedding. Then you put it on your right hand until the wedding band is has been placed on your hand then you can put it back where it was. This is a tradition that dates back some time to when people believed that the vein to the heart was in that finger.

It goes on the ring finger of the left hand-then when you get married the wedding ring goes on first and then you put your engagement ring back on the same finger.
