I base my judgements of people on their actions and moralities. An atheist can be the most loving, giving, sympathetic person in the world and a Christian may be awful.

I am an atheist/agnostic. I know this question is directed at those who follow religions, but I felt compelled to give my 2 cents.
I believe that "they" do see people as inferior. Most of them cannot accept the fact that people are different. Christianity in general is like one big infomercial. They actively and relentlessly seek converts. Going as far as shoving down your throat when you want no part of it. Why? They have been stealing money from people for hundreds of years (the church). In reality, christianity is a corporation just like Microsoft, Sony or Apple.
If you look at todays news, you will see all Muslims being portrayed as terrorists and America is the good guy coming to save the day. Which anyone who is educated will know that this is utter nonsense. Here is the kicker though. What do you think the British were calling "Americans" during the Revolutionary War?
They actively do this to portray the atheist as the godless, lawless person with no morals what-so-ever. The problem with that is this, can you define moral? Is being moral different for each person, society and religion? The answer is yes. It is nothing more then subliminal messaging to the masses. If you tell someone something repeatedly, eventually they will start to believe it, no matter who they are and what they believe.

I'm a strong Christian, having experimented in Wicca and various other stuff that just seemed cooler at the time. I see Atheism as wrong, only because I spent months researching God and Jesus and found a lot of historical evidence backing up Jesus Christ's existance. Of course, it's completely a matter of faith to determine for yourself whether he was actually who he said, posing, or just insane. I won't go there.
My personal beleif, no matter what other people say, is I think it is better to beleive in something strongly than to never decide what you beleive at all. I guess, what I mean is you should do your research and find for yourself what is real or not. It's better than spending your life going "well maybe this" "maybe that". Eventually we'll find out who was right and who was wrong. It's not worth arguing now.
As to why they're depicted as such - that's because there are so many stereotypical people. Most of the Wiccans, Atheists, and Satanists I know have been just as normal-looking as anyone else, but the loudest ones become the stereotypes. On that same note, I know just as many Christians and Jews who hardly ever go to church. It's just the popular way to look at people, even if it does tend to end up offensive.

Before I became a Christian, I actually went once to an atheist "church service". What astonished me about them was their absolute inability to accept any notion of the supernatural whatsoever. It was almost like I was speaking with people who could only think in two dimensions. That creeped me out, and I never went back.
Later, after becoming a Christian, I read a debate between a Christian and an atheist, and the atheist seemed to be arguing that whatever can't be scientifically proven shouldn't be believed, even if the evidence all seems to point in that direction. Especially no leaps of faith were allowed -- even the kinds of leaps I found acceptable back when I was an agnostic.
That's really the only thing I can find "fault" with in hardcore atheists: it's like they're missing out, willfully perhaps, on a whole dimension of life. There's no spiritual side to them. It makes them feel (to me) hollow.

I don't believe in the concepts of god that are around, so you might call me an atheist. But then again, I do have my own spirituality.
My truth is, among other things, that there are as many truths as there are humans on this planet. Everyone has his/her own truth. Who am I to say that they are wrong and I am right?
People gain a lot from being religious. I don't see why I should condemn that.
Actually I believe that we humans will never be capable of understanding 'the truth', because it is far to complex for our little brains.
But then again, this is my truth. Yours might be different.
That is why it is not difficult for me to respect other people's views.

I don't judge anybody by if they have a religion or not, or what their religion is if they have one. I think that there are rebels and criminals in EVERY religion. Just cuz someone is atheist doesn't mean they are a bad person, they just have their own views and choose not to live or go by some religion.

I generally view Atheists as idiots who haven't fully thought about their existence on this planet. Most intelligent people believe that, by virtue of "being", there is some force that does exist.... No, not some guy on a big chair in heaven perhaps, but an energy, essence, unity....whatever...something. Atheism is just plain idiotic. An atheist might as well erect a big neon sign above his or her head that says, "I'm a total idiot!"

Atheists are viewed as "damned" as they have not let God or Jesus into their lives and view God as some sort of fake entity, like Snata Claus or the Easter Bunny.
They feel that man is in control of himself and there is no divine power orchestrating things.
(This is an over-simplification, but it works here).
Because they are "godless", they are less than human. When they are challegend in something, whereas many will turn to God for guidance, the atheist, having nothing, will have to kill themselves and end their miserable lives and....
Sorry, too many of those sappy films.
There is nothing "wrong" with an atheist. It is their system of belief (or non-belief). I am married to an atheist and let her have her views.

I am a total atheist and agnostic. I hate the fact that people can be so stupid and insecure to actually believe in god and religion , the two top reasons for war and deaths in the world, and still praise them.
as far as social status and the belief, I can tell you I am a double post doctorate and double doctorate. 16 years of education and from the best universities in the world. so when i hear the kind of comments you are referring to I ignore them considering their source.

It's something that has been taught by the Righteous Right forever. Even liberal Hollywood still uses these stereotypes because the "right" has a lot of influence.
So the lies remain the norm and people just believe them.
Truth is most people believe much differently than the Right...
No one is inferior, they are just different. Period.
