Was thinking of joining marines. Now I'm not sure. I want to be able to go to college with grants from the service. So what should it be? Marines, Army, Navy, or Airforce? (definitely not Coast Gaurd)

Ok, Marine wife here. Join the branch that works best for you. You're going to deploy sometime with either branch. Make sure you have your contract in writing before you sign. Pick a MOS that will suite you best in the civilan world. TX and IL pays for about 100% of your college tuition...if you get an honorable discharge. There are benefits for vets too. You are able to take college classes while you are in the miltary as well.

Just don't allow any recruiter to push you into something you don't want.

Picking a branch is a very personal decision and must be weighed very carefully. What is most important to you? Do you mind going overseas and fighting on the front lines? Do you mostly just want the educational benefits? How important is family life to you - do you have or plan on starting a family? How physically fit are you? Can you swim?

If you want to fight for your country, no ifs ands or buts, then the Marines and Army are good choices. Just know that you will most likely be spending most of your time fighting the war on terror. Marines have a 12 week, physically intensive boot camp. Army a 9 week. Marines have to run 3 miles when the other branches require 2.

If you want more of the fringe benefits - education, quality family life, and high tech career options then you are probably better suited for the Air Force or Navy. You may still get deployed, but it will be in shorter spurts. Air Force is a 6 week mildly intensive boot camp and the Navy I believe is 7 or 8 - and you need to know how to swim.

The Air Force and Navy are more "family-friendly" as well. The Army and Marines tend to go more with the motto "We didn't issue you a spouse and kids." Granted, I was an Army brat and that was great - my AF and Navy friends just had it better. :-)

I suggest you go to any of the branches websites and see what kind of job paths interest you as well.

Hope this helps!

I spent 12 years in the US Army because I wasn't yet qualified to be accepted by the US Air Force. If you don't want the Coast Guard, I doubt you'd be much happier as a Marine. While I highly admire all branches of the services, I would speculate that the Marines would be the 1st to die, toughest, meanest, & dumbest, the Navy would be okay but kinda gay, & I'm a land lubber, the Air Force most progressive, & the US Army as the easiest way to stay on the federal payroll & enjoy professionalisum, tradition & a splendid way of life. The US Army has been very, very good to me!

Air Force 4 years and counting. I am an C-5 crew chief and I have never been in harms way.

I just finished my degree from the college of my choice and it was all paid for by Tuition Assistance. I have not even touched my MGIB, so after I get out I still have all that money to do more schooling if I want. My work even gave me time off to do school work, when they could spare me.

If you want to make some fat cash and see the world be a "flyer". Either a boom operater or a Load Master. If you want to research jobs go to About.com and look up military jobs.

As for all you hippys, where would you be if it were not for the military. We would all still be speaking British;)

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a mediocre military experience that gets you no where... Go air force. If you want to be half military/half civilian who wants to get all the credit for all other branches. Go army. If your into fixing people up.. Go Navy.. If you want some experiences in your life that will change you and make you a better person. Go Marines.

you can apply for other grants and scholarships and not risk your death at all. Especially if this is the reason that you want to go...i.e. to pay for college. There are many more opportunities available to you than you may realize. The sites below provide many resources (many the same or similar) for you to get to and through college. The last two is other info regarding the military. Please read through and consider these as alternatives before making a decision only based on a free education, because it's not a good enough rationale...you can get there without the potential loss of life. If you're going to be a soldier anyway...read them still...information that is not in your viewpoint may still serve to strengthen your viewpoint.

best of luck to you

p.s. I see some of these folks saying not to enlist with this branch or that, because they are the first ones to go...but if the military is your route...then does it matter...if it does....then you should reconsider the decision at all.

Seriously talk to all the recruiters and look at your job options. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you to join the branch I want to join because I think its the best. Everybody has their personal specialties and every branch has certain needs. Don't look for which comes off as the hardest or most prestigious. Fighting for your country is fighting for your country. Look into all the branches and pick what fits your interests and needs. Good luck.
