I just had a blood test that needed 9 viles of blood, and I was wondering if you could ever die from getting too much blood taken out at once or overall in your life time?

The average adult has 10-12 pints of blood in their circulation - depending on the size of the person. An average sized person can donate a unit of blood with no adverse effects and an average unit donated is approximately 450 ml. Most tubes for blood testing holds 7 ml and a few hold 10. So the maximum amount drawn with 9 vials is 90 ml - significantly less than donating a unit of blood. A red blood cell has an average life of 120 days. You are constantly making new red blood cells in your bone marrow and will replace the ones lost relatively quickly. Blood donors can safely donate gallons of blood in a lifetime with no adverse effects. So you can see how important eating healthy and getting plenty of iron is.
One group of patients in the hospital do need to be given transfusions after having blood drawn for laboratory testing: very low weight premature infants. Because of their extreme small size and because they are often sooo sick they often have tests performed once or twice a day. The few drops taken really add up, and almost all of these tiny infants receive multiple transfusions. Because they are so small they are given transfusions ranging from 6 ml to 50 ml depending on size of baby.

I don't know why they would need so much, but 9 vials isn't much in volume. They must be running tests on every thing they can think of. Your body will replace the blood you need. You can have too much taken out. Ever heard of someone bleeding to death? George Washington's doctors killed him by "bleeding him". They thought in those days they could cure someone by doing that.

Can you ever get too much flesh drawn from your body?

What about air?

Speaking seriously however those viles are quite tiny. Its not like 9 pints they are only small tubes. You are all right.

No, as a matter of fact, draining a few quarts of blood is an excellent therapeutic treatment. You should go cut your wrists right now, drain some of your blood, and experience it first-hand right now!

Honestly, the average sized man's body holds about 8 quarts of blood (I think) and you can lose about two before you encounter serious problems.
