They are good, loyal and protective dogs. Don't train them to be fierce killers or anything because they can be.....My boyfriend and I have 2 and they are the BEST dogs ever!

Pitbulls are for an experianced Dog owner ONLY! This breed is not like your standered collie or lab. You need patience they are smart, but very thick headed. You need to be aware you can't do all thecool dog owner stuff like dog parks (BIG NO NO!!!!) You need to be aware of the breeders out there too, you don't want a puppy from fighting stock. Some pitbulls even in the right owners hands may turn dog aggressive so need to be ready for that. If you are single and no kids, and then meet someone the dog maybe very one owner attacted, causing problems, and a Pit bull type dog can live for a very long time 13+ years, and weigh any were from 35 to 80 lbs. Since they have a short coat (not as noticeable shedding season) they do need to be a INSIDE ONLY(expect the couch to be their domain)!! If you are renting talk it over with the landlord. If you own a home, talk to your insurance company you can and maybe, probably will be dropped, good luck finding another one, and reasonable. Not all pits are bad, if in the right hands, and raised right. They can be a very affectionate breed that can bring yuo great pleasure, as a dog owner, just be aware sterotypes, and bad plublicity. If you do decide to get a pitbull, get the dog spayed/neutered and go through obedince training!! Start training young, and you need to be patient not only with the dog, but people around you. Hope this helps alittle please look in to the research, and possible the option of adoption there are enough people benefiting off the breeding of the dog, and even more being put to death at shelthers.
punish the deed not the breed!

I've a friend who raises English Bulldogs. This information on pitbulls comes from what she told to me.
Pitbulls were bread to fight. The main thing is, IF you insist on buying a pitbull, make sure it's a purebred. When you start mixing breeds that's when you come into problems.
If treated well, loved, no fighting, they can be decient pets.
(end of info)
Pitbulls have been known to turn on you, or a child, out of character. I've seen videos where a small child was attacked suddenly and had been a beloved family pet for many years without problems.
Many Apartment complexes, and houseing areas, will not allow pit bulls due to their sudden attacks. If you get one you'll need to check to see what the rules and laws are governing a pitbull in your area.

A pitbull can be a very dangerous animal if you don't know how to handle dogs. But they are not all bad, and can be raised to be very good loving pets. My neighbor has one as well as three young girls. The dog is great, although much too energetic for me. So don't get one if you don't have the time to exercise and discipline the animal, this is a must for a dog with such an aggressive reputation.

Pitts need their people, they are one of the most loyal dogs out there and are great with kids. If you chain them up outside to be neglected (as so many do) they become neurotic and yes dangerous. No animal deserves that anyway. Also, if you train them to be mean, they will. Duh. That goes for ANY breed. They are absolutely beautiful and amazing family pets. They do not deserve the rep they have gotten, the dumb owners do.
I have a Pitt who was brought to the shelter, was used to "practice" and was almost killed then left to die. I am fostering him and hes an angel.
They "can" be dog aggressive if you don't socialize them well, but if you do things right you will have no problems.
I would like to add to the other posters... a baby was recently killed by a lhasa apso... so childern left alone with ANY dog is not a good idea, just in case.
Also, Pitts are currenly number 4 on the list of most reported dog bites with labradors and cocker spaniels ahead of them. Dont believe the media people... they go for shock value. Learn before you spread hate which is unjustified.
They will not turn on you either. Thats retarted. LEARN people LEARN.

Are Pitbulls good pets? Of course they are , if their owners are responsible people who take the time that is required to train their dog! Like any pet they need supervision and should never be allowed to roam around freely. Pitbulls aren' t the problem irresponsible owners are.

If you really have to ask the question the I would tell you "No" only because you had to ask it. You'll know a good pet for yourself when you see it. They can be a good family pet when raised from a pup with children. Don't pick a dog that you are not sure about. Ask a local breeder for information about the dog you are looking for. If it still doesn't feel right then don't get the dog. Pittbulls can be excellent pets with good breeding and the right owner. "Dogs are only as smart as their human," at least that is what I say

Yes it all depends on how you raise them. They are very loyal and protective over their master. They tend to not like other animals, other dogs, cats, squirrels, birds, anything. I have owned a pit bull for a year and a half and have had no problems. I have also been around pits for years prior and have seen no problems. You have to take time with them and play and work hard at training them. as puppies they are very, very playful and stay that way for almost two years then they start to mellow out. They are very bull-headed hence their name. They were originally a fighting dog so they do have that tendency in them but with the proper guidance and structure and most of all LOVE they are a wonderful pet that will be by your side for a long time.

Pit bulls make very good pets if you are a good owner and take the necessary steps to make sure you pet gets enough exercise. They are a very strong breed and have high energy levels so you have to make sure you are up for the challenge.
