I got 2060 on the SAT. Here's how I prepared.
Critical Reading- I read lots of wordlists from sites like www.number2.com and I did many practice questions.
Math- My Dad is a great Math teacher, and he helped a lot. If you know a good teacher, ask them to help you out. Do a few diagnostic test and then concentrate on your weakest areas. Keep a log of the problems you got wrong and re-do them at some point to ensure that you've honed your skills.
Writing:
Essay- Again, my Dad. Get someone who will analyze your essays critically and who will give you points to strengthen your argument.
MC- Did lots of worksheets with my Mom.
Apart from this, I also did a very helpful collegeboard prep course on the net. I also did a Kaplan training class which was completely useless and I would never recommend it to anyone.
Bottomline- Don't worry about how long you study. Make it good study time where you get the most out of the time you spend. If you can get your parents to help or if you have a good teacher who can support you, there's nothing like it. Finally, be cool while preparing and on test day. The SAT is a minor challenge that we
have to face, so don't get worried or stressed and don't let it scare you.
Good luck!

As with any standardized test--the best thing to do is review the topics and do plenty of practice exams! By plenty I mean more than 4 real exams. It will help you get familiar with the format and what kinds of questions they keep asking. Many times the questions are recycled....
SAT is hard, but not if you are confident and comfortable with it. Learn the test taking strategies and you'll ace it!
The best way to study grammar and vocabulary is to read a really good newspaper--like the New york times, and do their crossword puzzle (I'll swear by this. I got an 800 on verbal!)
Buy the Kaplan review book, it's cheap if you get it on eBay. And take a prep course, they'll go over the methods that will help you get the answers quickly.
Good luck!

I have not done the ACT or GED, so I can't compare them, but the SAT is hard (of course, its a test) It uses alot of logic, and reasoning skills.
The best study guide is the official SAT study guide, its the size of a phone book, (eek!) but has sample tests to help you familiarize yourself with the test. If you study hard, familiarize yourself with the test, you'll do just fine, even better if you have an exeptional IQ. :)

I found that the ACT was easier than the SAT. (The new one is apparently much easier than the new SAT.) I would suggest going to the College Board or Princeton Review websites if you want info on the SAT. http://www.princetonreview.com/college/testprep/testprep.asp?TPRPAGE=77&TYPE=NEW-SAT-EVENTS gives you a locator so that you can find free SAT practice sessions and classes near you. You can buy the books from Kaplan's or the Princeton Review, but I think the best way is to practice.
Here is some other helpful stuff:

If you can afford the time and money, take a prep course. It teaches you what to expect and how to study.
