Girl asking guy out isn't "desperate". Desperate is once he tells you no, you keep bugging.
Don't worry, it's perfectly fine for women to ask guys out. Just invite him.

Try to sound cool. along the lines of 'I have a full life and lots and lots to do......but, I was just wondering if you wanted to go see a movie, I can slide you in my busy life'. Act as if asking him out is not all that important.
Of course, you could just go for the desperate chick...it's cute.
